Fire in 2A south of Old Glory

Post by newoldglory » Wed Jun 25, 2014 11:48 am

fire started last evening south of camp. it burned all night and is heading north. It is now within 1/4 mile of camp and burning strong. Not much of a chance that it will get rained out. I am going to look at it close up and will concider making a fire brake but that is some rank grass. I'll comment soon.

Is the water up enough to run and flatten the grass down ? Or start a back burn. Doug

I've got a pump, hose and nozzle ready to go. I'm calling you now.

I'm expecting a call from blackwater in a few minutes. Apparently, the fire isn't real bad and the willows to the south should serve as enough of a buffer. It's very hot here today with about a 10 mph breeze from the east. No cumulus clouds developing yet so rain doesn't look to be happening. As soon as I hear, I'll post up.

Just heard from Gerald. He feels safe for the time being. I'll be on stand-by if he needs me. Here's a picture of the fire he just sent.

May be as much as 2000 acres before it's done. Wind is down for now but storms are on the way. Got great videos and pics, with more to make. 6 boats or more on the way.

Thankfully enough, looks like they are getting a lot of rain out there right now. One good thing about a brush fire is that they often create the rain that puts them out. Waiting to get an on-site report from Gerald or Blackwater Jason.

The fire is 100% contained. Jason Freeman was on a tour when he came upon the fire at Old Glory. He stayed long enough to assess the situation, then went directly to the landing and unloaded his passengers. He immediately came back and he and I started to chop away at the fire. Others began to show up and with the help of some light rain, we were able to dose the fire. Word got out fast and I was not able to return the calls because I was out on the airboat getting videos and pics. and watching the progress of the fire. Many thanks for all those that offered help but as we all know, time is of the essence.

This exact same thing happened 2 years ago at the Rubber Tree Camp. A lightning strike set fire to a ridge on the south side of the camp and burned the ridge 100% up to and around Rubber Tree. That area still has little to no vegetation and no wild life. Although fires can be a benefit in some areas, they can be very detrimental to other areas. :( The tall grass supplies home to wild life and sound barriers to others. After the fire south of the Rubber Tree, I was frogging in that area and was approached by a camp owner that said that I was keeping him and his family awake with my noise. I apologized and went to another area to frog. There was never a problem until the grass around his camp burned. His sound barrier had been eliminated and he blamed me for disturbing his sleep. :slap: NOW, I suppose that I will go out and give some one a piece of my mind when they disturb my sleep in air boat country. WTF? I live here full time and will never give in to any one again that comes out "occasionally " and has a problem with my noise. I do not run a noisy boat and do not run a loud boat on purpose at 2:30 in the morning on the east side where the "city slickers" have moved in "after we have been here for 60 years or more". I don't come out to the everglades to get drunk and raise hell because I know that the chance of getting caught drunk driving is slim. I have no problem with adult drinks as long as the adult is a responsible person. I pick up garbage after the drunks and look forward to meeting to meeting new people. Life can be good. :thumbleft:

I saw that Local 10 report and started to try to let the girl
know how wrong she was -- but figured it would be wasted effort.

Amazing how little our "news" sources know about what's around them.

The news media will throw ANYTHING out there to make a story knowing that the general public would not know the difference.

One of my last adventures with Don "Pops" Kirk was riding out the fire at 4 moons after he had that head on collision. Just me and him and a garden hose. His boat was banged up so we took mine to camp to mash the grass. A long sleepless night balancing protecting the camp and getting the boat out of there with its 40 gallons of AV-Gas dangerously close to the flames. Good times... Good times
Many could live on what we have wasted.
