Neils Scorpion WaterThunder DD

Post by Waterthunder » Fri Aug 07, 2015 2:07 pm

Been having a ball with this boat, she cruises at 1400RPM's. We still have a ton of work we need to make some major rigging changes but so far she has ran very impressive even out ran a SBC with a gearbox on a step hull wends night at laughmans. Plus 3 other 406 V/8 SBC boats with gearboxes and a bunch of O-540's. We did just barely loose too one to supercharged O540 that had a gearbox but it was dam close, cant complain. The only other loss was to Tony, he did put a big whipping on it but we will get him next time.

Here is the good part I drove all the way to Oak Head and back Sunday, then raced a ton wendsday at Laughman and several people drove it around the Lake, Dane, Helms Eddy and me she make around 20 passes. All of this and only burned 4 gallons YES just 4 gallons.

What's the maximum RPM you're turning with this motor?

Probably not a guess for you, since you built the motor, but what kind of power do you think you are making at that speed? I'm guessing ~325 hp/500 lb-ft?

I'm sure the motor is capable of big power but what was he able to wrangle out of it at his target RPM? Just because it might make 600+ HP doesn't mean it makes it at 3,400 RPM. I would imagine that he designed the engine for a much lower powerband than his gearbox applications. He might actually use a stock setup, as far as intake, port size, runner length. If anything, I would think a cam with what would be known as an RV grind in any other setup. Just curious.

Why would he even begin to tell what he used or how much power it is making? He will just get chastised by some of the resident retards.....

The last DD I built was a amazing struggle with some people, It seamed like some just couldn't understand what horse power a DD motor makes. Some were obsessed with saying it was a 600HP motor even thought it never in a million years could make it on a airboat. And exactly as getchasumairboats said I sure the hell don't want to get into that debate. So I will say this,, there is no way in hell this DD motor will ever make over 425HP with that said I am not ready to state what it makes at 3,400RPM's. The next two I will, We have 2 more DD boats in the works and maybe a 3rd.

Nice work. Who built the fulldeck it's sitting on? Is that a standard built hull or is it skinned thin for weight?

Awesome, glad to hear about a CM DD busting some AC tail! Nice looking boat too. Real clean work.
I don't get too caught up in the debates about the CM/AC debates, but it does provide some great entertainment.
Thanks to all the builders of both.
13 ft Diamondback, GSO-480, 4 blade Q, gas tank too small, not enough cash to fill it.

I'll respect that Dave. Hopefully, you'll understand the questions I ask are strictly my curiosity, not a challenge to your expertise. I do find it more than a little interesting that you mentioned 425 HP. How cool would that be; weighs less than a SV and makes more HP than a 720. ;)

A boat that ran that good and only used 4 gal of fuel has got my attention. Just hard to wrap your head around a DD with that good of performance. I will most definitely be watching for the future builds. It just might be the next big ECO debate.

I personally just like the diversity of ideas. "Professional" racing has gotten boring to me because of the homogenization of machinery. One of the things I love about airboats is that there is such an extreme variance in ideas and applications.

Keep it coming Dave! Really really cool!!!

Add to that ..... you fill your boat and your pickup at the same gas pump. 8)

Mighty enticing combination. If my o-470 takes a complete dump I might pay Dave a visit. The engine is over 50 years old so the funeral can't be too far off…right?
I'd have burnt 4 gals in 40 min of easy running. I also like the low RPM operation of a DD power plant.
Dave, does the DD use the external thrust bearing you designed?

PS. Please don't mention this in front of my boat…I can't stand to see a boat drool.

Let me know if you ever decide to visit his shop. I'll meet you over there .... it's a 'candy store' for motorheads. :glasses7:

One of the things that impresses me so much about the LS engine platform is one time Dave pulled his boat in on the Ridge, and not much more than ten minutes later I walked over and laid my hand on his engine! That entire aluminum block is a heat sink. A few quarts of some 30 wt. Mobil 1 and you'd be good to go.

It damn sure surprised the hell out of me. It runs damn good and there's quite a bit left in the setup.

Were working on 2 maybe even 3 DD's right now. One will be a 14 aluminum boat with seating for 5. Yep that's right 5 people for my family,,, this is gonna be a good time. I will say the 14 ft boat will not have plasma TV, GPS, Hot water heater or a sink but it will be one hell of a fun economical airboat.

Exactly I grew up around airboats and to this day around the shop we jokingly say,, airboats only need cup holders and their called your right hand. Anymore I see such big heavy loaded to the gill airboats and wonder why not just get a bay boat. I'm waiting for an airboat to come out that has a dish and a TV that will be next! I don't have anything against big boats with tons of accessories,, their just not for me! I like em clean and simple.
