13' Palm Beach Full Deck Under Construction (PICS)

Postby cdid » Sun Aug 30, 2015 10:00 am

I have been fortunate enough to have myself a 13' full deck built by Abner Thornton in Okeechobee.

I am about 3 weeks away from a completed hull. Anyone have any cool ideas/pics on riggin for their boat, I just would like to have some ideas. We started on the structure yesterday with hopes to having structure done and poly on by the end of next week!

Here are a few pics of the build, I will keep them coming as the boat gets more progress on it!

Lookin GOOD!! Abner builds some NICE boats!! A buddy of mine has one of his boats with a 600 hp W/T motor, that thing is a beast. What you using for power, and is it a hunt boat-ride boat- do you do any frogging will determine on how to set up the rigging. I wish I could get my build moving that quick :banghead:

PipeDog,

Thanks for the kind words. It will be a hunt boat 100% we are doing 5 bulkheads in the boat to help build the strength... Very seldom will i frog. Abner built me a GITSO 520 conversion motor back in January so that motor is sitting in the barn at home. His timeline is about 6 weeks for the complete boat to be done... Riggin n all

That will be a stout boat for sure! I have 4 bulkheads with seven simpson runners, probably overkill for a ride boat but I want it to last.

Yea Pipe,

We did 5 Simpson runners and 5 bulkheads, I did 090 on the bottom. What did you do for your bottom?

I used .125 on the bottom in 6061, I'm sure you used 7075 for a hunt boat. I think Steve has our boats mixed-up...Lol

Well, Thursday was a bust working on it because the damn band saw blades that are available to purchase in Okeechobee are about as sharp as a butter knife. So didn't get much done Thursday but i brought some blades from west palm for Friday, and he was able to get the back structure built and complete... Working on the rest of the structure today and monday and poly will be the next task... :banghead: its certainly comin along nicely, starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel!

Also had Painterchic finish the design on my rudder wrap (i drew it on the computer as much as i could and she made it look right lol) and send it to me on my old boat, never got to put it on before starting this build.. So i am putting it on the boat for this build just have to have a patch printed over the old FL numbers which is no big deal at all...

Thanks,
Chris

Man, I like this little boat a lot ..... well braced, great size and shape. It should be a bandit in skinny water. Hope I get a chance to see it run one day. Pretty work, y'all. :thumbleft:

Interesting hull build are you going with aluminum rigging? Bottom sheet 7075 what are the supports? Is it welded?

Im doing air ride from Mr. Simpson, so the seat structure will be aluminum, but the cage i am doing conduit cage. There are only a handful of the supports welded into the structure. Most is 1/4 and 5/16 grade 8 bolts. 98% of structure is bolted together with grade 8 bolts.

The boat is riveted (runners, gussets) and the structure is bolted.

Off to the powder coater today and will have it back tomorrow afternoon!

Anyone have any problems with powdercoated hulls? I am using a marine grade powder and am told its tough as nails

Be careful when you put the boat in the oven to cure that the heat does not melt the special glue on the transom May cause leaks but you can also reapply the glue after the powder coating process

Rob

BTW .....BAD ASS hull, that boat will go !

Yes, going to reapply to transom if needed. Have a 520 conversion motor abner just finished building me in april... Should run/hunt very well. Running nitrous for the sticky situations lol

Just my opinion here, but I would reconsider powder coating the hull. I've never seen a riveted hull powder coated (although I'm sure it's been done). I've seen a few welded hulls powder coated, but they don't have to worry about the glue melting in the seams. I hate a leaky boat, and I think that's what you'd be gambling with. JMO. Good luck.

I agree ..... powder coat the riggin and engine stand, but I wouldn't do the hull if it was mine.

The boat hasn't been sealed yet, its at the powdercoater now so its too late to worry, going to seal the boat after it gets back from powdercoat if it looks like we may need to.. The powdercoater has done a handful of them and he says his boats hes done have not leaked, obviously at some point its going to leak but the actual powdercoat itself does help to seal it so he says

Thanks bud, its coming along very happy with it!

Doing a bronze semi gloss for the hull, almost a matte color and doing black semi gloss riggin, almost matte... Its all marine powder and supposed to be very durable for the application
