Lake Okeechobee Burn

Postby Duece » Tue Nov 03, 2015 7:17 am

Anyone got any details on this? Had a survey crew over there working yesterday and they sent me pictures of it burning. I'm glad, that place had gotten rough in the past few years.

Burning Moonshine Bay. They sprayed it and are burning the dead grass ,bulrushes, to eliminate decay
Of them.
It is a start, but needs a lot more burning than that. They should burn a section every year to
have a better handle on it and produce a healthier lake habitat.IMO

Got checked at the Moorehaven ramp by FWC 3 weeks ago..well not really checked. More like looked over. He heard us running in an area known for stumps and wondered if we had trouble. Anyhow BS,n with the officer he said they had a helicopter coming to shoot homemade napalm on several areas that were sprayed a few weeks earlier. Good to hear they did it.

They only burned in moonshine bay area, went through there yesterday. Only burned cattails looks like about 5,000 acres give or take...definately didn't get them all....

Talked to one of the biologist, probably not again till spring sometime. He said this is the first time they have burned on the lake since around 2000. I told him we needed whole lot more to burn...

Damn right, that place is rough as hell since the water's been kept so low. I hate to hear they aren't going to burn again, all the marsh could really use it, especially the hayfields and the stuff around Curry Island.

Did you get to see the burn area? Just trying to get an idea of where it is.

It's between dynamite pass and the north trail coming from monkey box into moonshine bay. Can't miss it.
