FWC & Audubon proposing boating restrictions state-wide

Post by MarshRider »

At the last FWC Commission meeting, 10 new "critical wildlife areas" were proposed
and 5 current areas were proposed for changes. A "critical wildlife area" is a place
where nesting or resting birds are protected from humans. While birds only nest during
one season of the year, these areas can be closed year-round by Executive Order of
FWC. In most cases, Audubon manages these areas for FWC.

With one exception, Withlacoochee state forest caves in Citrus County, all proposals
concern sandbars or similar areas throughout the state. For the first time, FWC is
proposing boating buffer areas around several of these locations. This appears to be
a "reach" beyond FWC's authority and could impact all types of boating
.

FWC is holding workshops on all these areas from July 11 to August 10.

Staff will bring back recommendations at the September meeting and the Commission will
vote during the November meeting on designations.

Flagg Island, Franklin County July 11

You can see the presentation given to the commissioners if you go to the agenda for June 22 meeting.
It was the first item on the agenda - just before the 6 hours of bear testimony.
