Gps with satellite images???

Postby getchasumairboats » Mon Aug 08, 2016 3:28 pm

Does anyone recommend or run a gps that has satellite images ? I want a little more detail than what my old garmin 540s has. Up in the air on either a gps or I pad mini.

If you have a smartphone google some GPS for marine apps. They have some pretty good ones that will track you and leave a breadcrumb trail. You can even buy mounts to mount your smartphone like you would your Garman. Google Fly Florida Marine app, I have it and used it for a while in the Glades when I was learning 2A. It came free with my Iphone.

What happens if you don't have cell service.

90% of my running is at night. Alot of places I don't have cell service . I know the I pad has a built in gps that will work if service lost.

The main thing I need is to be able to mark waypoints but I would like satellite images to make sure I have covered all of the area. Really don't care about crumb trails.

I downloaded the motionX app and started using it today. Also I verified that you can use a Bluetooth GPS device to connect to your smart device.

from MotionX website:

MotionX-GPS HD

Can I use MotionX-GPS HD on a Wifi iPad that does not contain a GPS chipset?

Yes, the Wifi iPad will run MotionX-GPS HD. Your WiFi connection does provide location data, although it’s not as accurate as GPS.

To get a more accurate GPS position you may use an external GPS sensor, such as Bad Elf. This will allow accurate waypoints even without a cellular signal.

If you have an I-phone, spend the $2 and download Motion X. It's like having a full feature gps synchronized to your phone and e-mail with real time sharing capability.

If you have a samsung it won't work.

(I hid the waypoints due to the names)

I don't own a Monterra, so not sure all the additional features. I believe it just has more pixels and can store more memory than my E-trex 20 with downloadable Birdseye imagery. The functions are great, but there is nothing it can do that Motion X can't. The real benefit of Motion X: since it is connected to cellular data network through the phone, it has EVERY MAP ALL THE TIME! And way more memory!! Also, without going home and plugging into anything, I can text, e-mail, and save my waypoints, tracks and all other info, instantly, wherever, whenever. Mine is in a lifeproof case, so it's waterproof (wife dropped it into 10' water.... Still going). Plus it works without cel service(don't understand it, but have done it) just like the non-phone gps. Download the map you want first, then use it wherever. Plus it has live updates of other users and data can be shared real time.

I have never seen a gps that can do that. It is all the benefits and accuracy of any hand held gps I know of, integrated into the cellular data network through your phone.... And it's always in your pocket anyway... For $2!!!!!!

If you have poor signal on the phone buy a $100 tablet and download the app off line maps works great. Be aware iPads don't have a built in gps but the cheaper ones seem to work fine and you can download what ever maps you want, Google,Bing and what ever else you can find. I have a Acer which works great and you can zoom right into the airboat trails.

If you have a iPad get a Bad Elf blue tooth gps which will sync to the ipad
