who is still running a stock [or close to stock] gpu?
I've been a member on here for several years now. I've been here long enough to know that I don't know much about airboats. I been here long enough to know that some folks will let me know I don't know anything about airboats because they are older than me and apparently are smarter than me.
but, I would like to know who is, who still can appreciate the bueaty of running a gpu that is close to stock, maybe with a holley rather than a zenith carb, and just running the heck out of it on a light boat. my 11-12' old light hull with a Hoffman rebuilt gpu has been the best airboat I ever had, and that is over a 4banger Lycoming, a 15' Pori'er hull with BBC, and a Thurman 12'sled with a AV540 on it.
for day in/ day out hunting boat, the gpu makes them all look like divas in a cooking contest. lol
fellas with wraps on their boats or 800hp sleds need not reply.
I frogged all night in the swamp and then passed thru the swamp bouncing off trees to my deer stand and then drove 2 hours back to the camp only to repeat the whole thing in time to get to the dock and sell my frogs.
that is what a airboat is for.
sorry for the long post, just think some folks get too wrapped up in drinking a beer on top a levee while their trophy wife is bending over making friends and everybody is worried about scratching their paint while good folks are running nets. traps, and lines to make ends meet.
peace and happy new year,
jopete

You sound like you are a "True Airboater" to me.

Re: who is still running a stock [or close to stock] gpu?
Different power plant, but appreciating the beauty of old and reliable is not any
different in my view. Change a just a couple words and I could have written this:
I've built a couple and had a few more over time, but over the last ten years, that particular boat is the one that always seems to still be here when the more recent one ends up going up the road.
I fully appreciate the point you make and did not perceive your post as being overly long.
There are many folks here, on whom your point is not lost.
Happy New Year to you to, JoPete! Keep on, keepin' on . . .

I can't honestly say I use it to make ends meet, but I can say that we (me and that old boat) have been involved in a more than a few 'rescues/retrievals' where another brother was really glad to see that old Cadillac idling up.jopete wrote:I've been a member on here for several years now. Whats a wrap?
I am a 540 owner its close to stock just removed one carb and add some more compression. My bud use to have a GP on a 13 foot laser it was dependable.

I believe he is referring to the "Vinyl Wraps" that you can commonly see on high end vehicles and sport fishing boats now-a-days.terrible ted wrote:Whats a wrap?

Re: who is still running a stock [or close to stock] gpu?
My last boat was a 11 x 7 full deck with a stock GPU and a woody. Sold it unexpectedly at a Poker Run event.
It did what it had to do to get me around. Made some good memories with it. Got me another O-470 engine on the present boat. I can appreciate the simplicity and reliability of these boats. Frogging is my favorite thing. Yea, I got a wrap on my boat cause it was cheaper,
and I took the pictures in the Glades of the sides and transom. Sniper took the rudder pics of the Cypress Swamp and that means a lot...and it looks cool and different.
I can also appreciate your view of true air boating. It's in the blood...frog blood, gator blood, duck blood, hog blood...

The twins put the camo vinyl on there trucks and now regret it (cant get it off). I think quiet a few guys would of liked to look under there tucks both at the same time.

I never heard it called a tuck, but if it is that thing below the navel I am quite familiar with it.
