Top airboat manufacturers?

Postby yzakjuru » Wed Jan 11, 2017 3:56 pm

I am new to the world of airboats and I have been taking a look at many different companies that sell airboats. But being a newcomer, I do not know which companies are known for their quality and reliability. Is there a consumer list of airboat manufacturers according to their popularity and market share? I would greatly appreciate some advice in knowing what companies to first look at and which companies to stray from. Thank you!

There are so many, and it is a bit overwhelming as a new customer.

Each one is unique in some aspect. Where you live may help you decide which one, as builders have subtle differences for the area they service and the clientele they normally have come through the door.

Have an idea of what you are looking to get? Where do you live?

Thank you so much for the help. I live in Seattle and I am a helicopter pilot who one day dreams of owning an airboat in Florida or Louisiana (especially Louisiana). I am an experimental enthusiast when it comes to aircraft and I recently learned that homebuilding is also prominent in the airboat industry. I am interested in airboats that can be used for work but also recreation. I'd like to get my feet wet and one day visit the South and take a look myself and see what the unique differences are and which companies are generally lauded as the best. I hope you can point me in the right direction and help me with my research. Thanks again!

Well being an aircraft enthusiast and homebuilding experience, do you want to go car motor or A/C motor? That will help dictate who you can void out... as some now dont like to mess with A/C motors... but the Florida guys still do plenty of A/C boats. Only a few here in LA and TX running A/C motors but there are like I said a few.

Yes, I found that you guys even use lycoming engines! But yes, I would like to stick with car motors as they seem to be the most popular route. Is there a consensus on what airboat manufacturers are currently at the top? Or is this something that is murky due to the vast differences per state?

I bet the helicopter you fly does NOT have a car motor. Either a turbine or Lycoming. There is a reason for that...weight!!
Car motor or aircraft engine...personal preference.

Floral City Airboats is another manufacturer that you should check out.

They're in Floral City in SW Florida, and do some pretty good work.

Thank you Rick, swamphunter, and br,lc,LA. I will check out all the companies that you have suggested and visit the ones that are most recommended.

@fhp6, we actually used a car motor in our experimental helicopter =) Aircraft engines are very expensive due to the need for FAA certification of said engines. Because of this, they are also much heavier than custom experimental aircraft car motors. But of course they win terms of safety as they have been tested by the FAA extensively.

For the subject you asked about top Manufacturers.
Boats in Florida are either aluminum or fiberglass. Listed above are just the larger Aluminum manufactures and produce mostly welded boats, with some riveted. While they all build great boats, there are a number of small guys that build great riveted or welded hulls as well
Al David
Pete Vento - Mamba
Benny Webb
Marty Bray - Fiberglass
Paul Jackson - Fiberglass
New - Streamline - Welded
Dyna Marine
Panther
Sure there are a few more.

Being partial to Palm Beach style hulls, might as well add these to the list:

Stossel Airboats
Klein Airboats
12' Open Palm Beach, IO-0470-L 260hp, 72" NGQ

Talk to Sam at Panther in Cocoa. They are the innovator in new products and building some great boats for the money. One of the oldest manufactures out there at the same location with a impressive list of government agencies they sell to as well.
