Everglades Patrol

Postby glades cat » Fri Apr 21, 2017 8:32 pm

I'm reading Tom Shirley's book. It begins when he arrived in Miami in the 30's and continues through the decades as he grew up and later worked in the Everglades for the Florida Game and Fresh water Fish Commission. What a great read. I met him at the public meetings with the FWC and other agencies some years ago. He spoke with authority and educated those present concerning the delicate ecosystem of the Glades, providing a historical pulse of water-related mismanagement and its effect on the wildlife there in. He pulled no punches.
His writings are historical accounts that will inspire and influence everyone who holds dear the responsibility of being good stewards of these precious wetlands.
He was the real deal. A Gladesman through and through.

Feel free to list any other books that should be on a Gladesman's "must read" list.

I have seen some of his old videos from back in the day to include a episode filmed with the great Curt Gowdy.
What Lieutenant Shirley did back in the day to both protect the wildlife and culture of the Everglades is legend. He was one great gladesman !

For those who may not know in his warden uniform and on a Florida Game and Fish Commission airboat he filmed a segment on how the Federal Government was destroying the glades. It was shot in Area 3 and received national media exposure with Curt Gowdy and another well recognized environmentalist all lending full support and highlighting the mistakes and damage. That takes balls!

They showed the glades family doing everything they could with no public funding to build small islands for the animals to stand on to avoid the flooding as well a rescues of hundreds of deer.

If you have never seen his filmed airboat crash it is death defying. The bow lifts and the boat goes over with him being thrown into a near dry swamp flat. He must have rolled 15 times and stood up and walked away with his boat totally destroyed. It was said he had trouble with his eyes for many months after that crash due to mud getting back behind them.

I gotta read his book!

I read the Gladesmen book by Simmons and Ogden. A friend gave me the book. It is a great book, not because of the college professor authors, who collected a series of tales from real Gladesmen, but because each chapter is told by a Gladesman in their own words. The book paints a picture of how it was before the "water managers" and the Department of the Interior ruined it all.

Davie and it's dilemmas is a good book
Talks about the Army Corps of Engineers digging the canal from Lake Okeechobee to the New River
The reason the canal makes a left turn at US 27 and I-75 is because the Army Corps of Engineers did the survey wrong and we're heading the wrong direction

Also talks about the hurricane that flooded Pahokee

Tom Shirley was also involved in another airboat accident in front of Bergeron's camp that took the life of Scott sistrunk and broke Tom's wife's leg

Killing Mr. Watson is a decent read. It's kinda slow and its based on stories, reports, and notes from the 1890's-1900's in the 10,000 Islands.

The author takes some liberties but its based off the stories of a real person in a lawless area.

Totch is very good.

Hidden History of Everglades City & Points Nearby is filled with snippets from news and interviews and stories from the Everglades City area.

Gladesmen: Gator Hunters, Moonshiners, and Skiffers is good.

This basic website has a ton of Tom's stuff on it. A lot of his info was used to shape the stance that we took at ACoE meetings and public commentary. Theres some cool stuff in there.
