Better hull?

Postby Chrisco148 » Mon Sep 04, 2017 10:51 am

I have two hulls to work with, first is an older 16' freedom craft and the other is a 20' hartline hull. Both need work in there own rights. For gulf running in the backwaters what hull would perform better/worse and why? Let's assume that ether hull I use will be shortened to 14-16' and will be pushed by a 472 DD. Really interested in know witch hull is the better to work with, thanks Chris.

Not sure which would be better. But I don't think I would want to shorten a hull. If your going to fish the back country I wouldn't go over 16'. The longer the boat the wider the creek has to be to turn around. A lot of area I fish gets narrow and turns get tight just something to think about.

Let me rephrase my question, I'm interested in knowing the pros and cons of each hull. Ride, stability, power to weight, abilities... just assuming each are the same length. Just for conversation say 16' and powered by a DD 472

Both are fairly heavy hulls, they ride well and are predictable in the creeks. If I remember correctly the hartline has a 2 degree v in it to help it track in the gulf, both are stable hulls.
Buddy runs a 16x8 hartline with ls1 2.55 2 bld longhub maximus. Boat get on plane in a boat length, handle will in the creeks oh and he beat the crap out of it. With this set-up it runs great dry with 3 adult and all our fishing gear. His hartline we can both stand on the walkboard/gunnel and fish. Another friend ran a 14' freedom craft with a 500 his set-up was very heavy and would just barley get up on the grass and turn around to fish.(motor had a lot of hrs on it). Seen it run and struggleon dry but have never ridden on it on driven it.
I believe a stock 472 can push either but will work hard.
On the gulf you used to see a lot of 16-20 long mullet netting boats with DD caddy. Still see a few around cedar key.
