Air Boat tour boat crash.

Postby Levelhead » Fri Dec 01, 2017 8:48 pm

About 4:00 pm today I was at the port in Hatchineha to get a take order and head home. Fire truck ambulance and sheriffs department were rolling in lights and sirens. As a Forensic Patholighist I am well versed in medical field and offered my assistance to Sheriffs Office. The deputy ask me if I own an airboat and I just happen to have it about 200 yards away hanging in the rack. The tour boat from Camp Mac Alligator Airboat tours was apparently over due and someone reported seeing a flare and other signals in Dead River. So I loaded the deputy up and away we went. As the boat I run is great in deep water I planed her out and we were there in about 15 minutes. 6 tourist and the boat driver were in the water with boat flipped on side. One air boat had picked up two men from Ohio and Deputy Key and I pulled the others out.Polk county S.O. Helicopter found them and was hovering over them until we got their. When I was getting in position I heard a nice bump on the bottom of my boat then look just a hair to left where I saw 6 to 10 pieces of freshly cut Oak wood about 12 to 16 inches long about 15 inches thick, kind of pushed down in the mud and hidden by the grass and the wood had had been freshly cut.
My fellow air boater this was a clear attempt to detur air boat's or cause damage to them. I got really mad as the gentleman who was driving the airboat was worried about his job and it was clearly not his fault. This is not the first time I have had those land owners put things in water. This was and is a clear and present danger to air boaters. Make no mistake I have been on this lake 30 years seen it all but these logs were 50 to 75 foot from shore buried on top of each other in the floating mud and hidden by grass on purpose. It could have killed 7 people. I am hoping everyone will forward this or let your friends know, and let all central Florida air boaters know what happened and lets try to catch the land or whom ever did this. Someone was clearly trying to keep people out of dead river. Hell it is so full of muck and stinks so bad I do not even run it. The deputy took pictures and the Game and Fish Comm were just arriving as well got the last of the passengers to the pontoon boat called to haul them in. Only minor injuries and the boat may have been runnig 20 to 25 MPH operator. Said it hit something loud then took to the air and everyone was in water. All form Ohio I think. This ranks up their with concrete blocks being hidden and pieces of metal being buried. Lake dropping and muck covering up these land mines. I am going over tomorrow to hunt for more piles. The Osceola SO and Polk County SO will be out as well. This could have killed 7 people very easily. Wanted you all to know to be watching for this. It was placed right in a left turn as wells they knew what they were doing. and it worked. 18 foot boat was 3 foot in air diving on its side.

Read the comment about what I said about air boat crashing. I was their as well with a polk county deputy on my boat. The two men from Ohio told me and deputy he was going about 15 and powered up to get through muck and some floaty things. I saw the logs. I had one hit bottom of boat. We did take the last 3 men on my air boat which is 13.6 with a 290HP angle valve and can take 4 people any where you want to go airboat wet or dry and it was tough for me get into the spot where we took folks off the huge air boat to pontoon boat to medical staff and sheriffs department. Jason Freeman you should really know the dynamics of what happened but apparently you do?. I did not see accident happen I went to helicopter hoovering over tour boat. If you do not think the logs flipped him I would suggest you take your self out their and look at what I saw. Fake new BS guys. I live on this lake. I have been on this lake 35 years and air boating 35 years. I learned from some of the best. Cecil Montgomery,Bobby Jones Sr. Larry Rosier, Clifford Rosier, and the list goes on. You go ahead and talk but one day you you may find your self out their on your side. I have found piles of concrete blocks under the water as well pipe driven in at angles. As a matter of fact I saw one more pile of logs today and told game warden who was going back to spot to picture and remove. For my friends I marked them with Bleach bottle floating. So if someone was not trying to harm a air boater it was a hell of a place to cut wood and haul it out in the water. I took the driver who flipped to pontoon boat.I hazard his statement. Game and Fish came to see me today to get my statement. I know what I saw and I saw the boat. It was in floating islands with black muck 3 foot thick which you fall through when you step in Grape vine and cutter grass. As I said one air boater was there in front of me picking up 3 and I got 3. The logs were placed exactly where you would rudder left. You would not see them as your looking left for the turn. Boat went up about 3 foot in front the operator said and then was on it's side. I do not think you can tell a diddle $#@* about what happened. Game warden confirmed it today his comments were it was really a strange place for someone to cut that much wood and then go stack it 50 to 75 yards from shore in an airboat trail. Of course you were not around when us old air boaters had to run through Gardner Marsh with our ass on fire to not be caught. Or on top myrtle trees to get back to the Kissimmee from Lake Jackson.Running the Indian mound at 2:00 am because we could. I could go on but your statement speaks for it's self. Next time I will just keep my mouth shut about the wood and call the friends I ride with damn near every weekend. I run that spot 2 or 3 times a week frogging. I know this lake like the back of my hand. Done posting

You can bet your azz that the Airboat Tour industry will be seeing some USCG attention as well as the insurance industry grabbing a rate increase.

Might not be unreasonable to at least discuss a "COMMERCIAL AIRBOAT ENDORSMENT" much like the "COMMERCIAL TOWING ENDORSMENT" that is on my Master. At least a discussion related to an additional training requirement, because today any OUPV holder can buy an airboat and start taking paying customers with zero knowledge about an airboat.

This is the Very reason I stress getting the U.S Department of Interior Airboat Operator certification especially for the Fire Rescue guys and LE personnel as well and all people that plan on taking a job as a tour boat operator and any one else that plans on getting an Airboat, I have seen guys that have been running an Airboat for years and have formed a lot of bad habits those are the ones that scare me the most, if these accidents continue I can see insurance company's at the least if not the state requiring some kind of mandatory training just like if you want to fly an Airplane, Airboats are quite a different animal than a regular boat and to many people think awe its just a boat and thats what get them or someone else hurt

A new guys view:
I was hired seven months ago as an airboat driver to do tours on a set course. I was trained for a month, I know it doesn’t sound like a lot but I can’t tell you how many times I ran that course alone and with a copilot before I was turned loose. I don’t do 180’s, I don’t risk getting close to hardwoods and the boats I drive don’t swamp to easily. My passengers safety is always my first concern. With all that said, I would love to take a course to improve my knowledge and skill (will check into that ASAP). I didn’t know they were even available. As far as an endorsement on my license I’m all for that as well. I wouldn’t want to make it so difficult as to deter people but to educate them. I got very lucky finding someone to take me on and train me. At 50 years old I love my new career and wouldn’t want to rob others of fulfilling a dream.

If anyone has information on one of these dept. of interior courses please share. Thanks
