0470 PERFORMANCE HELP??

Postby Timmylee » Mon Dec 04, 2017 10:27 pm

Looking to purchase FIRST ac boat, got my eye on a 0470-13 on a larry williams hull. clean looking boat, cant find to much info on motor however.

how strong are they?

what performance parts are avilable?

What i want is a souped up 4 banger or this 0470 souped up (yes i know its a six banger) i want enough power to haul 3 people total anywhere i want to go, small cooler and maybe some camping stuff occasionally (ill be alone for that one) i also like to go fast, Ive got some friends that are cert aircraft engine mechanics so i can have the motor built up pretty easy, just need a list and a website to get parts, I'm so used to going to NAPA for parts LOL my 406 sbc was no joke, i wish i could find it but I'm sure its long gone. any info would be helpful!

How big is the boat? Why didn't you ask your cert. aircraft mechanic friends? The 470 -13 is a old workhorse. Never thought of it as a hot rod.

They aren't informed on performance parts and such, if somebody could just list some parts and some names i can use google to find it, just don't have any idea what to look for.

hull is a 12 foot..

and they are more lycoming guys anyway

Not sure what the specs on a "0470-13" are, but my 470 is an aircraft, fuel injected, angle valve, 260 hp. Mine's on a 12' ride boat, but I could see it being a hot rod if setup for that.

I've been running it for 10 years & love it...however, I'd like to build my retirement boat in a few years and it's gonna be a straight valve 180 (Lycoming) built lite. I'm sure the angle valve Lycomings are more of a hotrod, but I don't want to be married to the airport for fuel.

IMO: AC motors don’t need more power. They need to be set up right on the the right boat... Done!

I also like my avgas.

That’s just me.

Start with pistons, 10 to one is going to bump it up and you don't have to split the case. Pacemaker ignition will let you play with some timing issues. Cam if you want to split the case. As old as the 470 - 13 is might be a good id
Jurnigan Engines can help you with parts. There is someone on here that can help you with the ignition. Do a search and I'm sure something will come up.
Let me warn you Continentals are not cheap to build. Have your wallet out and be ready to spend.

Norman Clay knows a guy that specializes in building and rebuilding aircraft engines. Also if your looking to sup it up I'm pretty sure you could make it fuel injection and put a turbo charger on it. I know the O540 SV sitting in my yard could take both.

Any recommendations on a source for the turbo charger? Been doing some research to educate myself on them with aircraft engines and haven't had much luck so far.

Could the block be opened up to accept 520 cylinders?

You can do it to a GPU don’t know what block you have?

If you are going to consider a turbo just know that you will probably have to replace the pistons at least and make sure the bottom end is in good shape to withstand the added cylinder pressures.

Good to know - thanks. This isn't something you'd find where I live so I appreciate the help. Searching for parts and answers online isn't always easy.

O-470-13 - 225 Hp @ 2600 RPM. Carbed motor with 7:1 pistons, made to run on 87 octane AV Fuel.

Like Gary said, it's not a hot rod in standard form:

Pistons can be changed to increase compression, but I imagine the mods are considerably more expensive to fuel inject it. Start with a fuel injected motor if you want to hot rod it, otherwise you are just trying to make up the difference.

Not knocking Continental, but if I had Lycoming mechanics for buddies, I would be buying a Lycoming.
I grew up thinking I-10 was the Mason Dixon line.

A buddy had a Lacey Everet built 0470-13 with 520 cylinders, lycoming rods and a few other changes, thing was an animal but was not really for cruising.

I believe that motor came out of a military observation plane Cessna Bird-dog ??
