Ice boat stuck

Postby Putz » Thu Dec 28, 2017 1:47 pm

Took my ice boat out on the snow for the first time yesterday, made I few laps around the house then went out on my pond. Broke thru the ice ( poor ice lots of snow on it) made a loop a round everything's going good. Climbed back up on the bank and instantly froze to the ground. Stuck to the point that I couldn't even budge it with a strap and my pickup. Had to jack it up and scrape the snow and ice off the bottom before I move it. What gives? I've always heard snow and ice were no problem. Boat has 3/8 super slide poly on it. It was 13 degrees 6-8 inches of fluffy snow.

Yep, wet bottom froze down to ground. When we park after riding in snow we park the boat on logs, branches, carry a couple 2x4's to toss out and stop on. Or else your froze as you found out.

If there is an wide crack in the ice will i be able to cross and keep going? This happens here on lake Erie almost every year. people on foot or quads need to be rescued by the coast guard.

We splash in/out of water on step, over ice, in the snow, etc.....but dont park a wet hull on the ground/snow. The ice and snow builds and sticks to the hull when stationary.
The same happens running snow, friction warms the bottom and you need to park the boat on something so it doesnt freeze down.
Throw down something like lumber, then park on top.

Ok thanks for info bk. I wasn't trying to stop, had my foot to the floor it stopped me. I will do some more experimenting before I head out on the lake.

Putz,
Heres some video running in/out of water on snow/ice.
Klondike Jim's video about 4 mins in is a good example.

Putz,

Great advice from our northern airboaters!!
What you're describing is something that happens more so during freeze up than other time. But it can happen any time in the winter...
One thing to remember is that your hull is going to be the same temp as the air. When you break through the ice and then climb back onto snow, the snow instantly freezes to the bottom of the hull. And contrary to popular belief, ice can stick to poly just as easy as it will stick to anything else.. It may continue to build up till you're stuck, depending on the temp and snow conditions. (this is a 2 hour discussion in itself...)
Best thing to do if you break through is to get back on bare ice if possible. If this isn't possible, then try to go as fast as possible (SAFELY) for a few hundred yards to wear the buildup of snow/ice off the bottom before you park. And as noted in the above posts, ALWAYS park on a 2x4, branches or something to prevent the entire hull from staying in contact with the ice. You don't have to suspend the entire hull off the ice, just having the front half of the hull off the ice is enough.
If you do freeze you hull to the ice, do not try to pull the airboat straight ahead to break it loose. this can put tremendous strain on your hull.
The easiest way is to pull your bow 90 degrees from the direction of travel. This "twist" action only needs to move your bow about 1" to 2" sideways to free your hull. Up in Northern Canada when I was teaching airboat operations, we would park on 4x4s but every once in a while someone would forget and get stuck.. It's amazing how with only an ice screw and one person, you could get your airboat unstuck off the ice. PM me and I can describe how.
Have fun and be safe.

I am thankful I found this. Been preparing to go boating now we have this cold snap here on buckeye lake. Not knowing this would been a hard lesson. Saturday should be first day out. So far I only been pulling off and lubricating cables and fixing trailer parts. Luckily my hitch coupler broke in driveway and not driving down road.

Carry some heat to thaw anything, just in case.

we have bigger issue with the cold here in Florida!

Iguanas are falling out of trees in Florida because it's so cold.

I'm curious as to why you guys don't run sprayers with some type of antifreeze ingredient in the sprayer. I'm guessing you could pass over the area where your going to stop and heavy spray it and then turn around and park on the sprayed spot. I don't know that would work for overnight or not but I would think it would work for short time parking or am I completely out of my mind.LOL

If you need dry forced air heat, check out my Planar heater.
We install the 2d model in the cab of the airboat, nice and toasty. Also make a portable unit for ice houses, wall tents to moose hunt, etc...

I find in certain conditions that happend but jacking boat up with farm jack and cleaning bottom off best ya can and a bunch of lengths of PVC pipeing laid under it and ahead of it get momentum from sliding over the pipes and she should get rest of bottom cleaned off with speed or if you can get it turned around back in water keep doing circles in water till it melts the ice amd slush build up off bottom and like others said always park on something skids, 4x4 , 2x4 pvc etc. So she don't freeze down and if you don't have anything to park on do a bunch of circles amd pack snow down to make a parking spot good luck and welcome to ice boating

Why not build a simple wedge and pull the ft end up on it and get 80% of the hull off the ice?
