Postby Wyatt_Griner » Tue Jan 23, 2018 9:57 am

I am new to building a boat I have recently got a 12.6 ft Kennedy Hull and I'm wondering what would be a good motor but doesn't brake the bank and I can enjoy on my first boat

The best power to the dollar basic value by far would be a small block chevy on a gear drive. There are guys using old 350's who have great luck and some folks are using 5.3 Vortec take outs. Really depends on the amount you have to spend.

You can get a 5.3 iron block motor for 750-1200 and it will be around 480lbs. Average Gen 1 SBC 350 has less hp/torque than a 5.3 (325ci) and weight about 100lbs lighter. http://www.car-parts.com is a good search engine but you need to know the model and year of the vehicle you want the motor out of.

BTW my current 5.3 which is carbed had 113k miles and has over 600 hrs between 2 different boats.

250 or so to rework harness and another 250-500 for a flashed and tuned ecm. Also once you have headers cooling system alt and starter it will move forward to most other LS motors.

And a simple cam change can add some decent hp/torque over stock. Weak link in a LS is the springs, locators and pushrods

For me I got a 5.3 now have a running boat and slowly but surely building a 6.0 for a replacement
Paint it the same color and mama will never know lol.
