Need Recommendations

Postby Duece » Sat Sep 29, 2018 2:56 pm

My dad's boat (94' 14' Combee 0540 SV) recently had a hull issue where the hull has delaminated. We are looking to replace with something similar, but are having some issues with time. Being that my old man is a duck hunter he'd like to make as quick of a switch as possible. All of the hull builders we've talked to are pretty backed up (many several months) and there are very few, if any real options out there for used replacements. My questions are this:

1. We live in the LaBelle area, but are willing to travel a bit if we need to. He'd really like to get HIS boat repaired, but I think it would take quite of bit of work. I'm having a tough time talking him out of it, but he keeps coming back to the fact he loves that boat and if it's going to cost as much as a new hull, but take less time to get done, he'd do it. We've already talked to one local guy that does fiberglass work on the side and his job has him too busy to do the work. I don't really know anyone else around here that I could trust to do it. Anyhow, if you know of anyone in Central or Southern FL looking to do some glass work, let me know. I'm sure there would be stringer repair that would need to be done as well.

2. As I've already established he loves that Combee. What boats out there as close of a match to the old Combees? I've tried calling Gilleo (no answer), and have had conversations with Cottonmouth and Predator. I know there are others, but just not sure of their names, or how similar they are to the Combee hull. He did call Triple W airboats out of Okeechobee as he's familiar with them and getting an aluminum hull isn't out of the question, but it not be his 1st choice.

Thanks all.

I wouldn’t repair that boat. We’ve done it, and the repair worked for many years, but it was a much heavier boat and did not ride the same after. I would look at rivermaster hulls too from Marty Bray or Jimmy White hulls.

Duece there is a Cumbee listed in the classifieds that sounds like it would be pretty close to a direct swap.

Yeah, but used hulls scare me. You don't know what's been done to them, how hard they've been ridden etc. I'm trying to talk him into a new hull from Cottonmouth or Predator, but it's just the time frame. Both are months out before they can even start work on the hull. My thought is though, if it was a new one, then there is nothing to worry about like you have with a used hull. IMO there's a reason hulls are in the classified section, and it ain't a good reason.

Anything used scares me any more.

I am certainely more of an alumninum hull fan, but for fiberglass hulls.

Ricochet, Paul Jackson ( Paul builds a very nice rigging as well), Jimmey White, Marty Bray (Can get a matching rake).

Maybe Big Casino will chime in, he has I thinks 14' Marty Bray with a matching rake. He may even by willing to part with it now that he has an aluminum hull.

Were I in your shoes I wouldn't do anything else until I exhausted that last possibility. That is a really good hull, and with the matching rake, has some of the finest lines around for a 'glass hull that you will find anywhere. I am already two hulls behind so am prevented from pursuing that or I would be racing you there.

Big smiles guaranteed if you were able to go that route.

I,ve owned several glass hulls, 7 yrs ago I got a 15 from Marty. its pounded dry ground at Loughmans and ran in 2ft chop in the Gulf, Its still as solid as the day I picked it up. Its the best hull Ive owned yet and I can tell you Marty is as good a guy as there is!
