Need quick replacement

Postby rost495 » Thu Dec 13, 2012 10:36 am

Have not had time or money to do the setup I want. I have flex welded straight to headers..

In the meantime what can I do to replace as is.. IE cut off the end of header, get the braided piece to give flex, tie it to flex and clamp flex to a new SS pair of mufflers?

NO welding? That would allow me later on to pull it apart and put the larger muffler in line when I have time.

Hoping to duck hunt in Jan if I can get it done. Would LOVE to have it bolted in place by Dec 23rd when my nephew is back from USMC for 10 dyas....

I don't have access to a SS welder at this time FWIW

Not understanding the question.

What is currently on the other end of your flex? Mufflers, turndowns, nothing? If anything, is it welded as well?

There are band clamps available for both butt and lap type joints that will work well. SS welding not needed.

sorry, welded to headers, then flex is welded to a muffler that goes out the back of the transom on each side.

I need to be able to do it without welding at this time on the quick and cheap.

So its just a replacement.

These clamps work well. They can make up for some imperfections. Flex pipe is very commonly used. Cut off the old stuff with an abrasive cut-off wheel. Stainless and teeth don't usually mix well.

Napa is not the only place. Your local heavy duty truck place may have some of the parts in stock. Depending on what size you are using.

The clamps work good, and make it easy to take on and off to work on your boat if need be.

Summit racing has the cheapest band clamps I could find. Also they make 2 different styles 1 for a Butt type connenction as listed above and 1 for a lap connection which is what I used. Been working for over 3 years.

Thanks for all the input. Will probably call Summit and point some questions at them.

just get out grinder .. grind the welds off and use band clamps ... and never ever weld it on again .. if you worried about a clamp coming off just put a screw thru it into the header pipe or safety wire it ... never ever weld what you may want to take apart in the woods and work on .. just a thought ..

cntry

Great input! I'll clamp it all from now, even when I change it.

Safety wire any bolts or screws.. but the next I"m a dummy question... drill a tiny hole through bolt head to attach wire? What wire, some SS braid fishing leader with crimps or such?

I believe Cntry meant a screw OR wire, don't need both (IMO). It's easy and effective to drill a small hole thru the band clamp into the header (or muffler, or trasom dump) and put a SS set screw in the hole thru them both. Prevents anything from sliding apart and easy to disassemble when need be.
