fwc deer management

Post by gruprgetr » Fri Feb 08, 2013 11:01 pm

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) would like to provide you an update on projects we have been working on regarding deer and deer management in Florida. Note: See instructions at the end of this message if you do not want to receive any future emails regarding deer management Florida.

Deer Management Units –We are moving along well with our Deer Management Unit (DMU) effort in Zone D. The three public meetings held at the end of January were very successful. In all, there were about 250 individuals that attended the meetings in Marianna, Tallahassee and Pensacola. We heard from meeting attendees about concerns and preferences regarding deer management in Zone D and there seemed to be a lot of positive excitement about this project. If you were not able to attend a meeting and are interested in learning more about the Zone D project, go to our website at www.myfwc.com/deer/dmu and you can sign up to participate in a live webinar (the webinar will be an online presentation with an opportunity to ask questions and will be limited to the first 90 enrollees) or you can download a copy of the presentation to review at your leisure. Afterwards, if you would like to provide input for the DMUs located in Zone D you can do so through an online survey also located on our website.

Webinar Information and Dates - If you were not able to join us for a public meeting, please join us for a public webinar about deer management in Zone D. This webinar will provide background on Florida deer populations and management, information on the proposed DMUs, and the results of a recent statewide survey of hunters, farmers, and residents. Participants will be invited to ask questions and will have the opportunity to provide written comment following the presentation. Your input is needed and valued. Below are the dates of the live webinars along with registration information.

Zone D Deer Management Technical Assistance Group - A technical assistance group (TAG), composed of members of the public, will be established to review all available public comments and provide input to the FWC on the two DMUs within Zone D. TAG members will be chosen based upon their expertise, the interest group they will be representing and their ability to attend the scheduled meetings. The TAG will have two in-person meetings in Marianna on Wednesday, February 20 from 10 AM to 3:30 PM Central Time and on Wednesday, March 6 from 10 AM to 3:30 PM Central Time. There will also be at least one phone meeting (time and date TBD).

As a reminder, we will begin working on DMUs for Zone A, B and C after we evaluate the Zone D project. We expect to be completed with the public input process for all DMUs in all zones by the end of 2014. We will send email updates when more information is available.

Private Lands Deer Permit Program – As a separate project from DMUs, we have been working on a concept to provide additional flexibility to landowners. This program would promote wildlife management on private lands by providing incentives to landowners or hunt clubs that develop and implement wildlife management plans and gather and provide deer population and harvest data. The management plans would include habitat management and/or hunting heritage efforts. Benefits to enrollment in this program would include greater flexibility in deer hunting seasons and deer harvest opportunities to enhance land managers’ ability to reach deer herd management goals and provide recreational hunting opportunities. More information on this project may be found at http://www.myfwc.com/deer . Additional information developed for the February Commission meeting in Orlando on February 14 may be found here:

Ha rvest data for WMAs – Just a reminder. Wildlife Management Area (WMA) harvest reports may now be searched online for areas where harvest data is collected. Everything you need to know about the harvest reports can be found on the web site for the reports at http://myfwc.com/hunting/harvest-reports/ . We hope you like it!

That’s all for now. Remember to purchase a Deer Permit to support deer management efforts in Florida.

Sincerely,

Cory R. Morea
