O540 Starter problems

Postby Alvinlee1915 » Tue Nov 21, 2017 7:00 pm

Hey I'm having issues with O540 straight valve. Having issues with the starter. Using a 1996 Supra turbo starter. Anybody know where a good mount is and starter or could point me in the right direction for a starter mount and starter? I love riding on the airboat. My favorite past time. Thanks for any help.

also run a ‘96 Supra starter on a SV 0-540 Came from Advance Auto.

If you are running that starter now, why do you need a new way to mount it?

I have a home made mount on mine. I have no idea what kind of starter was on it previously. I'm pretty sure it was different. When I first put it on the mount and adjusted it so the gear on the starter would turn over the flywheel it was fine. I'm thinking that it could be the starter mount due to the fact it was built for another kind of starter. My thinking is that since the mount was built for a starter I have no idea about than the starter that I have on there isn't seated on it just right. I'm not an expert but that's just what I was thinking.

Pics would be a good idea. Would also be a good idea to describe the problem as best as possible. Like, “the starter won’t do anything” or “the starter motor turns but the gear doesn’t go up” or “ the gear grinds on the flywheel and doesn’t turn it” or “the mount broke in half and needs to be replaced” etc... not sure everybody (including me) understands exactly what is going on.

The more info, the more likely you are to get the help you need.

Does the new starter have the same number of teeth on the gear as the old one?

Okay I'm trying to upload pics. To answer your question it seems as if the gear grinds on the flywheel. It will engage it and try to turn it over but makes a heck of a noise. Like it's grinding on the flywheel. Plus sparks fly where I have the wires hooked up to the starter. I've all ready took the starter off since it was giving me problems.

Yes it does. I remember taking the old bad starter and the new one I have now and taking them both to a Auto mechanics shop here where I live and getting them to take the gear off the old starter and putting it on the new starter so the gear and flywheel would mesh together right. The gear on the new starter I have now that originally came off the old one has 11 teeth. I just counted the teeth on the flywheel and I counted 149 teeth.

I had to replace the starter on my 0540. I had a problem with the gear engaging the flywheel. I had to make a spacer plate from .125" thickness aluminum plate or 1/8" material. At first I started with 16 gauge and tried but was still off then I went to the .125" thickness I was surprised at how thick it was but it works like a champ and I have had good service so far. I purchased the new starter from Jr. Jurnigan at Jurnigan Engine & Parts in Plant City.posting.php?mode=reply&f=47&t=70983#https://southernairboat.com/phpBB3/posting.php?mode=reply&f=47&t=70983#https://southernairboat.com/phpBB3/posting.php?mode=reply&f=47&t=70983#
