Post by jdeputy09 » Thu Feb 03, 2011 7:01 pm

I want to get opinions on the pro`s and cons of both motors. witch one would be the best engine on a hunt boat.

It's basicly the chev/ ford thing. They are both great motors. They both suck gas when you put your foot in them.
They both have alot of power, 240 to 300, just depends on model.
Bad thing: they both cost alot of money, sometimes you can get a run out from 4 to 5 thousand, alot of of engine builder will sell you on from 8500 to 10500. Depends on what motor.

To me the gold standand is the 0540. Nothing wrong with a connie 0470 or 0520. If I was going to put out the hard cash for a rebuilt engine I would go 0540.
Now you asked about the hunt boat, I would go sv 0540, a little less power, runs cooler, and they seem to last longer from what I have seen.

It's like asking ,"whats better" blondes, redheads, or burnets. There all good. :D

both are good engines. the 540 is 300hp and the 470 is 240-260 hp.i like a continental for the reason of the cams are sumerged in oil and the cracks are solid.plus the continental fuel injection is the best systems :florida:

LIKE C.C. SAID THE CONTINENTAL'S HAVE A BETTER CAM DESIGN. THE LYCOMING IS LIGHTER THAN THE CONTINENTAL. THE CONTINENTALS TEND TO BE CHEAPER TO BUY THAN THE LYCOMING. THERE IS GOOD AND BAD WITH BOTH.

Have had both....both great motors. Continental seems to be a little tougher. Always went with Lycoming for ease of field repair when I was working them for a living....could have a Lycoming cylinder changed and running before you got the intake system off the Continental :D
For a hunt/recreational boat it's really a matter of preference.

I have run both, and both kick a$$ in terms of power. Didn't work on the O-540, but did work on the O-470, and Grant is correct. I may be a little biased though, my O-470 still had the damn safety wire on it!!! :o My O-470 was rated at 260 hp @ 2800 RPM's (still had the tag on top of the motor).

The 300 hp 0540 is generally an i0540. To get the 300 out of it its usually injected and an angle valve. The standard 0540 is 260 hp and sv . Also as mentionded there are lesser hp's. I would think a better comparison is a 0520. But thats just me and I am not a motor guy. I just run em.

better make sure the 470 your looking at isn't one of those less then 250 hp motors they made. If so you need those helicopter pistons to pump em up to 300hp

MY MOTOR HORSEPOWER IS DETERMINED BY HOW MANY BUD LIGHTS I HAD. IT STARTS OUT A 160 THEN AFTER A COUPLE IT TURNS INTO A 200. THEN AFTER 6 IT IS A 540 AND THEN AFTER 12 IT TURNS INTO A SUPERCHARGED GEARED INJECTED 540. :drunken: :blackeye:

So the a/v 470 will hang with the S/v 540?

Motor ain't everything. Boat, prop, how much junk you carry. A 470 is a good motor and is lighter than 540. It also has a great Harley Davidson lope when it's idling.

Can anyone speak of the performance of the 470 when paired with a 13.5 cottonmouth hull? Not sure on prop but it’s a carbon 2 blade

I second that question. I'd like to know the difference too!
