Post by CRL81 »

I am in the middle of a build and can't seem to get a direction I was excited to convert to the 470 cause I've been running the 220 over 15 and was very pleased but two cylinders went down so I decided to go to the 470 but then I had a couple people tell I will b disappointed cause I will see no difference so now I am being told go back with 220 chromed cylinder with dome top pistons now I'm very confused any advice

You can get a good new 220 for less than that. And I would talk to some more people....you will see a difference between the 220 and 470. For one in oil usage.

I had my 220 GPU converted to an 0470, and the difference is like daylight and darkness! I have not had to get out and push it since the conversion. Don't even have to wiggle the stick. It uses little to no oil, and you can get it done for the $4,000.00. If something happens to the bottom end, you still have 6 good cyl. to bolt onto another case. Totally satisfied with the way this engine performs. Doesn't use a lot of fuel either.

I've converted several. More power and you don't drop cylinders. Thats what will happen if you run high compression in the gpu head. Chroming does not help the barrel seperation and dropping seats. Give me a shout if I can help. Alos have all the parts needed to convert.

convert it to 0470 ac cylinders those who say the dome top in chrome gpu cylinders are better dont know their azz from a hole in the ground and by all means dual mag it when u convert power throttle response and reliability greatly increase with the ac cylinders

Here's one I ran across in the orlando Craigslist. Posting ID: 3601712944 Says he'll run it for you.
Don't know anything about it personally but it looks good and he's asking $3800 complete! Check it out!

Almost forgot, it's a 470 GPU

Why do GPU cylinders drop seats but 0470 claim not to, how are they manufactured differently?

Cause GPUs have been overhauled many times, plus if the exhaust ports were welded up and refaced they didn't remove the valbe seats prior to preheating and welding them, the pinch fit goes away and it drops the seat.
Most O470 heads have not been messed with in that fashion and the tolerances stay in spec.

Steve at warrior aircraft was selling 0 hour gpu engines out of the generator for $3500, I don't know what he has now, but it gives you a price idea. I'd prefer the aircraft cylinders though.

The 220 heads with flat top pistons from a 470 8.6-1 do make great power but it will be a short lived engine. if you are looking to put a reliable engine together that will last a long time, go with the 470 angle valve, and make sure you get good cylinders to start with. i like steel cylinders b.c you you know they dont have as much time on them as the chrome cylinders, all the chrome cylinders have already been worn past the serviceable limit and had to be chromed to bring them back to std. witch means lots of time. Call around and and try to find a good set of run outs that are steel or call any good air craft cylinder shop. i can give you a few phone numbers of who i deal with and will stand behind all there cylinders.

"See no difference" ?????????????

Hmmmm... Might wanna ride with a 220 boat and then a 470 boat.. As stated above, night and day difference.. If there was no difference, people would not be spending 4k on a 220/470 conversion..
