metal filings inside mag???

Post by grey owl » Sat Apr 26, 2014 12:11 pm

winter is just about over and its been a great one, lots of running and its almost time to put the boat in the water. I was running around yesterday and lost spark from one mag, after removing the cover I fount that the points weren't opening but sadly there was a bunch of metal filings inside the mag. I adjusted the points and limped home but not knowing much about mags im at a bit of a loss?????
just wondering if this is something that happens and what I should do about it?
send the mag out?
is there a wear part I can replace?
am I doing damage running it?

any thoughts are appreciated.
cheers

Most likely bearing in dist. block has worn out.

Mabye, but the bushing in the dist. block is brass....shavings don't look brass....im think the rotor bearing just under the points cam is spinning in the housing and throwing shaving up by the points

Looks like rotor bearing to me also some people use regular bearing grease and it don't hold up. The bearings will overheat and fail.

thanks all, pulled the mags the other day and sent them out, I don't go past the points on my own. the lesson learned, it doesn't hurt to have a few spare mags around.
thanks will
