enough power for a deckover?

Postby jopete » Fri Jun 27, 2014 1:11 pm

Well, with the price of a tight lycoming being what it is, i think i may just find me a good gpu for my next project.
will a 220 push a 12' don davis deckover ok? i'm talkin stock gpu with a 500 holley carb.
i may have found a engine stand this week.

my old stock gpu is pretty tired but will still climb thru the cypress knees when i need to get a deer or hog out the swamp. the deckover will be my first one and looks too danged pretty to put in the woods. nobody around south la runs a deckover, but i have the fever.

i hadn't got the hull yet, so no pics untill i am sure i can work the deal out with the current owner.

The GPU is a little bit more chunky and underpowered compared to its AV brother but will push a well built deckover like you have mentioned just fine.

The GPU is lighter than a lycoming 0540 by about 80 LBS.

UPDATE.....
we shook hands on the 12' Don Davis deckover today. it will take me a couple of months to get the $$$ together, but it is all worked out.

I need one like a hole in the head, but dang-it i ain't gonna pass on the chance to see what allthe fuss is about. lol
my plan is to modify the engine stand from lycoming to gpu and drop in my motor from my current boat.

i didn't have the $$ to get the 300 lycoming that is on it now.

i'll post some pics in a few weeks.

I weighed a carbureted parallel valve O540 and a fuel injected angle valve O540 Lycoming, I also weighed a 520 Continental and a GPU470. The parallel valve weighed 448LBS the angle valve weighed 473LBS and the 520 ironically weighed 520LBS and get this one the 470GPU weighed a whopping 570LBS. All motors had lightweight starters, alternators, flywheels and headers the 220GPU was the only one with an oil cooler. I used our lab scale that is certified and calibrated quarterly and then double checked it against our shipping scale. Both read within 3LBs. I also have a Lycoming operators manual that shows 16 different versions of O540’s that all weigh over 400LBS. Funny you mentioned this because I presently have a bet with a buddy that an O540 weighs over four hundred pounds. He swears they don’t he has several Internet sources claiming so but I go by what I see with my own two eyes on a scale that I know is calibrated. I have also weighed some Lycoming 160’s and 180’s.

That was posted by waterthunder a while back. It doesn't weigh the O-470 and the paragraph has some weird characters but overall Kind of what I was thinking...

I had a gpu on a 15' river master and it would run ground fine green grass it was rough, just get A good one. You can always put 470 jugs on it. The ground power is a good motor.

Congrats on your Don Davis full deck. If the4 GPU is in good shape it will be a good power plant.
