Who are the best engine builders?

Post by jeepinocala1111 » Wed Jul 23, 2014 12:36 pm

I am considering just buying the parts and doing it myself but first want to investigate who to go to and have zero worries? 220 gpu. I know nobody wants
to post prices so simply pm me a quote all
I want done is 5 rebuilt cylinders .015 over
rings, rod bearings and the gasket sets installed.
My engine needs to be freshened up smokes a bit
too much for me.I replaced one cylinder it had real low
compression from a cracked head the rest seem to run
good with good compression. I am sure most if not
all of them could be rebuilt I dont want to wait.
Pistons in it are dome top aircraft that have the extra
skirt ring .015 over with a flat
milled on the top to run pump gas. The rod bearings
are .020 over. You have to have this in stock I
dont want to wait a month. If you are too busy and
have this stuff in stock give me a price for the parts.

The fella north of Webster is Russell Knapp and he builds a fine engine. He built me a PE-90 / 520 conversion and it is a thing of beauty. Very particular about his work and stands behind his product. All others mentioned above have good reputations I'm just more familiar with Russell's work. I will post a pic when I figure out how.

Probably best to PM any negative comments.

One name not mentioned was SpeedWheelie, a.k.a. Tom Jeffords. I took him a G.P.U. engine, with great oil pressure, and he turned it into a sweet running, ground burning machine. He got me some real nice 0470 aircraft jugs, installed another mag, and replaced my old 4-barrel with a new Holley 500 2-barrel. It used 1/2 qt. of break-in oil, and is yet to use another drop. I ran the break-in oil for 13 hrs., and have 20 hrs. on the regular aeroshell. I have read on this site, where a huge amount of oil is used during some break-ins, and then it continues to use oil every trip. I have not experienced anything like that. Even if you did not want to go for a total conversion, he would get my vote to freshen your unit up. I could not be happier with my engine. He's located in the Auburndale/Winter Haven area.

I am doing a leakdown test this weekend. Yesterday after work I ran it again up to maybe 140deg and it only had some real small puffs of white smoke only when you hit the throttle. I am sure it's not a fresh motor but could the new cylinder until it breaks in create enough pressure in the case to create this issue? I plan to rebuild the 5 cylinders that have not been no matter what I find just so i know what I have.

JeepinOcala ... I'd have to recommend Russell Knapp also, namely because he apprenticed under Jim Lauderdale. I've got the last gitsu Jim built before he retired. Not the cheapest, but i can attest to the quality and attention to detail ... that's just my $0.02

Do a leakdown and if they are over 65/80 and not burning any oil, leave them alone. Blowby exists because the combustion gas is escaping from the cylinder into the case. Excess can either mean the rings have not seated or the other side is the cylinders/rings are worn. A leakdown will tell you what you need to know.

Check with lacy Everett. He knows his continentals and may have all the parts u need. I just had lacy rebuild my motor and couldn't be happier. You'll have a hard time finding a man with more knowledge about aircraft motors.
P.s. he will also give u a straight up honest answer to any question u have. So if u have thin skin call someone else.
When in doubt, throttle out!

Yes I do know Lacey very up front guy in a good way. I am just going to hunt the parts down Lacey does not carry these parts on hand. I have called him and made the mistake of telling him it is a gpu :slap:
