I don't really see my self trying to start it with a hand crank , just sounds to much like work  but if that was used as a hand crank spot then the three gears inside must have a beneficial ratio to make it easy to start and also know that it would handle being used as a starter location or at least that's my thoughts on it

Gold Hunter, I'm not sure exactly what you're trying to do or what engine that is but it looks like you could use a Continental angle starter with that. Have you checked with any Continental engine builders? If that is a PE-150 you could pull out the Governor drive gear thrust plug and put in a Quill driver gear bearing and install a starter at the top of the accessory case.

Good luck with it.

des,
this is the one on my boat it's a PE-150-7 case. I did try a starter for that upper hole and it fits the accessory case great the problem was the clutch gear will not work the gear is the wrong size and does not properly line up.
a bolt up plug and plat so to speak item would be nice but I am ok with the homemade geared starter brackets now and I still need t get the alternator witch I would like to be mounted to the case also but may have to just hang I off somewhere . I do have a guy checking if he an get me a gear for the 520 alternator then I would just need to make a adapter plate but will not know until next week some time.

it's a PE-150-7 case with 520 cylinders and turbo ..............and hopefully if I work out this starter & alt issue it will have a 1.67:1 gear box

In short the answer is yes ,the way I want to cast the aluminum gear box case it would bolt right up to the to any 4, 6or 8 cyl GPU case thus the effort to remove the common airboat style starter , flywheel, and alternator form the prop end of the engine.
