which 540 cam

Post by Kris_Moore »

Trying to decide on a cam for my new 540,I'm about to start pulling it down and gathering parts. I want something that will sound good and last. I have the stock tio-540 cam now, I've heard of people running the turbo cam, the phase 3 cam and the h290s. Which of those would give me the best sound and performance? Or is there something that would be better?

Phase 3 is good. 290 sucks in my opinion. You can also get custom grinds on that turbo cam that work well.

Had some good, but more bad. Its a good mid range cam, but does not seem to allow much after 2500 for power. I have had several in a 540 where going from stock to 10:1 compression does not change rpm at all. The final staw on that cam for me was one I built about a year ago......you could pitch the 6 blade warp at 7,8, or 9 and the engine would only turn 2600. 9.5 it went down to 2500.

This engine will be 10:1, it's going to be just a play/ride boat motor. Going on a light 13' hull with light rigging and a saber or razr prop. I do plan on spraying it, I'll probably pitch it around 2900 and spray it to 3300. So Im looking for a cam that will give me performance but I want something that will sound good idling. Can the tio cam be ground without killing the lifespan of it? I normally deal with Larry at d&s but he doesn't like doing much other tHan the 290 grind because he can't say how long it will last.

Isn't the h290 grind the stock grind for gpu's. Hence why it falls after 2500-2600

I had a 10 to 1 540 av motor with a h 290 cam, I can say as for nitrous it loved it! It hit like a freight train on the bottle, I could gain 600 plus rpms on a properly sized tune. Now as for motor only it really sounded stock to me.

My builder loves the sound of the cam in my VO540. I don't think it thumps enough.

Kris, put a phase 3 in it and you will be happy. I can get you a custom one ground but you will have to dial it, more trouble than its worth. lol
