540 ?

Postby DWAdiesel » Thu Dec 31, 2015 5:07 pm

I found a Lycoming 540 on an old air gator. the id plate says o-540 B2B5. 235hp at 2575. I'm looking to build a new boat with this engine so was wondering what it is worth in running but old condition, planning it needs overhauled.
also want to know
1rough cost to overhaul.
2 if it can be built up closer to 300hp.
3 how complicated it is to overhaul, I'm a marine diesel tech. and build engines every day but have 0 experience with ac engines
4 it has the special alen nuts on the cylinder flange so I think that is a narrow deck?
any info is appreciated

Well cost of overhaul, all depends on how far you go into it. I just rebuilt my motor with some help of a few friends & had roughly $7k in it. That was turning the crank new cam new bearing new cylinders new Pistons & electronic ignition........ Yes the acorn nuts need a special cylinder wrench & yes it's a narrow deck. These engines are pretty simple inside, well it was when you had people around that have been in them many times before!!

When I did my e4b5. All I did was the top end, it was around 5k with the mags.
