noisy 0360

Postby rcm243 » Sun Feb 28, 2016 10:07 am

This 0360 that I have seems like it has upper end noise at idle, it holds 60 pounds of oil pressure at idle ,I haven`t revved it up much past an idle, is it normal for this engine to seem like it has loose rockers? RCM

No should not be noisier then any others. are you sure the sound is coming form under the valve cover area or is it in the upper end of the case?

Just to clarify: Are you asking if your 0-360 is noisier than other aircraft motors you have heard, or noisier than a car motor?

I believe describing sounds on a keyboard is futile, but don't worry, someone will try. I am also assuming this is your first A/C motor. If I'm wrong, I'm sorry.

Most aircraft motors are noisier than automotive engines, especially when they are cold. I am not an expert, but I was told by the guy who built my 0-540 that piston slap is normal on a cold a/c motor. Mine quiets down after a few minutes running at normal RPM as do most.

That does not mean any clank, knock or tick is ok, but don't freak if your A/c motor dosent sound like your truck.

Spend some time around other a/C motors (airboat launch) and listen to hear what is typical. The closer you get the more knock you will hear, especially at initial start up.

Hope this helps.
