Just give your location and possibly someone from the forum with a lot of time with that engine will help you out.aluminumwelder0073 wrote:first time on the site and trying to buy my first boat. I believe the book calls for a min of 13 pounds, hot at idle.

Re: O-470-11 help
Here are a few tips:
1. Take an experienced airboat person with you to check it out.
2. Take the boat out and run it for over an hour to check temps, oil pressure, tach, vibrations, etc.
3. If it passes these tests, take it to a qualified aircraft mechanic and have a leak down check done and a good once over on the engine, carb & mags.
Even if #3 costs you a couple hundred bucks, its worth it in the long run. Airboats are money pits!! You pay to have fun.
Good luck and welcome to SA.

Re: O-470-11 help
I would not get it if the oil pressure is lower then 40 cold or lower then 40 hot that sounds too low Mine is 55 to 60 cold 45 to 55 hot. And I think that is kinda low.aluminumwelder0073 wrote:Thanks for the help and for the welcome to SA. I will post an update when the deal is done.

Thanks jeep has your 11 been a reliable engine for you. I heard some low rumble about it's reliability.

Re: O-470-11 help
Anyone else have a 470-11 that mite have a few tips on that engine.I just don't want to get burnt on this.I have read enough horrible stories I don't want to live one.
Re: O-470-11 help
they don't need that high of oil pressure. min 20 is good for a continental hot idle. you will see some engines that are running as low as 10 psi at ide and still fine. some of the old e- series are most notorious for that. look up engine specs online and you can find almost anything you need to know. google is the best tool you have if you use it.

I have a gpu but 20 psi oil pressure seems way too low. The -11 I have been told to stay away from.aluminumwelder0073 wrote:Thanks jeep has your 11 been a reliable engine for you. I heard some low rumble about it's reliability.

Re: O-470-11 help
I am VERY surprised oil pressure at idle shall be at least 10 psi at idle and oil pressure shall be 40-75 psi at speed above 1500 rpm.kwanjangnihm wrote:http://www.southernairboat.com/pdf/airc ... ental/470/

You could never get me to buy any engine with oil pressure at 10 psi at idle is this will all 0470 engines?
Re: O-470-11 help
I thought the 10 psi sounded low too but it is what the manual says. The odd thing for me is the document used to certify the O-470-11 for aircraft shows 30-60 psi with no note for a lower hot idle while the 470's that have a letter behind them do have the 10 psi note.

Re: O-470-11 help
A good friend of mine is a certified ac mechanic this must be why he told me to stay away from certain engines. I wonder what the tear down inspection time on one of these engine is when in a plane?Planeguy wrote:I thought the 10 psi sounded low too but it is what the manual says. Re: O-470-11 help
I don't have any experience with the 470 but based on this document I would guess it is recommended at 1500 hours.

Re: O-470-11 help
Whats the deal with folks giving there opinions to questions like " what's exceptionable oil pressure for an o-470-11"!!
The answer to the question is what the manufacturer "TCM" Says it is! Not your uneducated professional opinion about how much oil pressure a motor would need for you to buy it or what your AP buddy told yeah once.
When you start engineering, warranting, and federally certifying engines for flight the you can dictate the proper oil pressure parameters for that engine. Until then lets stick to the manufacturer specifications.

Which specs do you use? The numbers in the Army's overhaul manual from 1960 or the numbers in the Type Certificate from 2011? They both come from TCM.dshaw94 wrote:Whats the deal with folks giving there opinions to questions like " what's exceptionable oil pressure for an o-470-11"!!

Re: O-470-11 help
throw some lucas oil stabilizer and lucas oil stop leak in that beech and roll it. that's what i do.

Re: O-470-11 help
My O-470 has about 65 hours on a fresh build. I am using 9 quarts of Phillips Aviation 20W-50 oil. My pressure is around 60 psi cold and 40 psi hot. I am not an expert by no means, just doing what Lacey Everett told me to do.
