anyone running 0720 on their boat
I have a lead to 2 720 that are at TBO and the guy wanted 2 new engines installed and wondering if anyone would have any interest in them for an airboat application before I buy them without having a use for them.

There are a handful of them around. Unfortunately, I can't point you in that direction.
A question though . . .
If you have a 'spare' Cottonmouth hull, how could you have 'no use' for at least one of them?
You could have a single front driver that never got stuck.

I agree with Deano, just junk that nasty car motor and put one of them 0-720 on that hull you'll will not have to worry about buying a gear box or getting stuck.
you didn't mention a price and that will make a big difference if you will get people interested or not

Re: anyone running 0720 on their boat
he was talking 6k but I will try to get him to a lower price if people are interested in purchasing one if not both of them. they are fresh out of the plane just reached TBO.
as for me putting one on my boat. that wont happen as much as I love the way my grandfathers 0540 boat ran I am an automotive technician and I will stick with what comes natural and not try to relearn everything about a different design. figured this topic would be more about which is better than the task at hand

Re: anyone running 0720 on their boat
My question would be how many car motors does it take to outlast a aircraft motor.
Re: anyone running 0720 on their boat

Ok, with or without blowby, as I've saidterrible ted wrote:My question would be how many car motors does it take to outlast a aircraft motor.
Before if you guys with your 1938 (aircraft
Motor) could harness crankcase pressure
(Blow by) with maybe turbo and you wouldn't
Have to run an oil line with all thank crankcase
Vapor !!

Funny this subject came up again. I will first say I am an aircraft guy up until I went over to gto and they started a 500 hp three blade airboat that I can talk over while reving it up that was crazy and the 500 hp part I pretty much think will get you anywhere. Then the sticker shock. There is a new playing field if car engines can be that quiet they are just as good my boat is damn good but a couple of quarts of oil per tank I am told is normal? Not to me I am now searching for a good car engine boat dam they are expensive. I cant even argue that ac vs car engine anymore. Times are changing and I for one thought this would or could never happen. How long they last well we might just get a chance to find out.

Re: anyone running 0720 on their boat
Been there ran with a bud who had a cad and I ran small blocks. My 19something helicopter motor has been run hard and put away wet and has lasted twice as long and run way more.

The discussion of one or the other is fine and unending on SA, However the original post belongs in the Classified Section of the forum. Please advertise there. I will leave this here because with a classified ad its just a reference to your advert. which is allowed.

I think the down side is fuel consumption; I have seen figures of 20 gallons/hr. avgas, which is going to add up.
Would be interested though; sent you a PM. Thanks!

Re: anyone running 0720 on their boat
scott not even in my possession i was just looking to see if there was an interest before i even considered talking to the aircraft mechanic that offered them to me. I knew this thread would go in that direction and thats not what i wanted. I turn wrenches all day long on vehicles not aircrafts and thats the main reason i run one. If their is any kind of demand then i would persue the contact and then create a classified. Thanks for letting it stay and hopefully these guys can stay on the task at hand and stop playing who likes what better

Re: anyone running 0720 on their boat
FYI: A good friend , Leon Skinner, of "Skinner's Mach. Shop"- Miami, Fl., (now passed away,20-30 yrs. ago),
had his big alum. camo duck hunter Airboat with a BIG Lyc. 0-720. Yep, that's 8 cyl., 4 BIG jugs on each side!
Had aircraft hydro.- reverse-vari-pitch prop even way back in 70's-80's. Remember he used to pwr., "back away", at the 1 st. and 2 nd. launch ramps-West of 20 mi. bend on No. side of US 41 (Tamiami Trail), Conserv. Area 3. Carried 6-8+ duck hunters and their gear, easy up to his camp on N. end of Skinner's Head. I rode in it a few times. Ran great . This is only Airboat I've ever seen/rode in with the 0-720. It was a very
successful install so yes, it can be done ! I've had, built, and run many Airboats w/4 and 6 cyl. aircraft engs. for almost 60 yrs. None now. Am lifetime member of Airboat Asso. of Fla. since 1961 (55 yrs.), and past VP, acting Pres., Board, etc. Now retired. Was just down in Everglades-S. Fl. last week. Now live in N. Ga. Mtns.

Re: anyone running 0720 on their boat
let me talk to the owner of the engines and see if he is willing to sell at what price and see what I can work out with him first then once I have the go ahead I will start a classified to be pursued at that time. this was just a feeler to see if it would be worth the time to push forward. thanks
