Gso-480 oil pressure problems

Post by Chaos6.0 »

Cold idle is between 85-90 and when the oil gets hot the pressure is about 6-9 pounds. Just put a new oil pump in and nothing changed. Engine runs good and makes no weird noises while running. When i changed the oil there was no metal shavings or flakes in the oil so i wouldn't think it would be the main bearings. Any ideas or suggestions

Check Gauge. If that is true pressure, its way low and you have a problem. Main or rod bearings, worn crank, or worn case in cam journal area

Chaos did you just purchase the engine? How many hours on it? Any other info on engine you know of? Oil temp?
A few other things, is there enough oil to circulate the system, is the oil cooler warm/hot, have you checked/cleaned relief valve, strainers or vernatherm for obstructions, checked/cleaned suction or pressure lines, oil pump intake obstruction. (just throwing this out there)

Are you near any qualified AC mechanics?

Gary gave good input if it is a worn engine. :thumbleft:

I had the same problem with mine, as the oil thinned I would lose pressure and the oil temp would raise. I pulled the motor to replace the rod bearings which weren't in bad shape so I replaced the mains as well. They were a little worn but not bad. What I did find where three out of the six Cylinder Cooling injectors (oil injectors) were faulty, There is a check valve which appears to open at a particular pressure but were free flowing oil into the cylinders off the main oil journal continuously.

Would this apply to a straight valve 540 carb motor?

Would that explain high oil consumption without lots of blow by or smoke and does the case have to be split? How can I determine that would be the issue?

Case would need split to properly diagnose the problem.
