O-540 mags have no kill switch wires

Post by jakerat87 » Thu Nov 10, 2016 10:30 pm

I recently bought an o540 straight valve engine that was a direct take off engine out of a plane. My mags dont have wires for kill switch. Could anyone explain how to wire them? There are two holes in the points caps labeled switch and retard. When i take that cap off there is a wire going to the hole thats labeled switch that looks like a plug socket of some sort. Is there a connector i can buy that will plug into that hole and thread on...? Need help thanks.

See those holes in the small cap on the mag? Those are where "p" leads with special terminals are inserted and threaded on to the cap. If the part number of your magnetos designates the left magneto as a shower of sparks mag it will need two leads , one for the "l p"lead the other for the shower of sparks lead.

If you don't have time to do it right the first time ,
Where are you going to get the time to do it a second time?

It also appears that the left mag used the retard for startup, I'd suggest pulling it and installing an impulse coupler and pins, then omit the right hand set of points.
I never finish anyth,,,.

We have the P-lead kits for these mags and I agree with John, you should convert the left mag over to an impulse mag. We can handle this for you also if you want.

P-lead plug and cap for retard port gone, the harnesses stay with the airframe, no reason to remove cap otherwise.
