E185 -3 oil coming out of crank case vent tube
E185 -3 oil coming out of crank case vent tube
Thanks for reading any help or ideas appreciated. My e185 is a dry sump. Runs great except for is smokes out the exhaust some and after about a minute and a half of riding it starts to blow oil right out of the crank case vent tube. It will not blow it out if i just crank it and let it idle. The compression ranges between 188-198 . The smoking im not to conserned about. More worrisome towards the oil blowing out. I believe it may be the sump is getting weak and filling the case with oil. Any advice or if someone has had the same issues would help. I have seen one other -3 like mine and it dose the same thing.

Well you need to do what is called a "leak down test" after engine is warm to diagnose your issues .
I would venture to guess you will find one or more exhaust value leaking which causes the smoke out exhaust you mentioned , I'd also guess you have some excessive blowby on your rings cuasing high crankcase pressure which will force oil out the vent tube (Also check your bearings)..........don't worry that just means you'll make a whole bunch of car motor buddy since that helps them follow a aircraft motor out of the water
All issues sound fixable weather you are capable to do them your self or just find a shop to do it for you but your first step is to do a leak down test so you have a pretty definite answer what you will need to fix ........ if you want to get rid of your new carmotor boat buddies

What dosent cost money anymore? No biggie. I just didn't know if anyone has had this happen before. Also my next step is a leak down test and I know exactly what that is. Thank you

I had the same problem on my 0-470-11.
Oil can not scavenge back to oil tank. Later models had extra return tube.
I removed my up draft manifold/oil return.
Fabricated a oil return manifold.
Installed cold air intake tubes with updraft on front of engine.

They are notorious for positive crankcase pressure

Re: E185 -3 oil coming out of crank case vent tube
most aircraft that ran that engine had what they call an air/oil separator installed on them. It collects the oil from the crankcase blowby and returns back to the oil tank

Just for anybody that may have had the same problem or will one day know someone that has this problem. Smoke was one bad ring and the oil blow by was due to a worn out scavange pump

Easy fix. Back "in-the-good-old-days", I installed
plastic tube hose out of the case vent up
to top of back of the cage with a good modded lawn-mower
muffler w/brazed on tube fittings. Mount this small muffler
in upright-vertical position. This will usually
keep any oil from blowing out. It always worked for me.
Always wire safety tie this breather hose to the cage to be
sure it won't ever go through the prop. Still miss Everglades/
