Cont 470

Postby barhopper » Sun Aug 20, 2017 5:55 pm

Ok I need some help. I have a IO-470. It's been sitting for awhile. We cranked it up today. After warming up we only had between 5 and 10 psi oil pressure at idle. Around 30 at mid range. Couldn't wind it up because we had it mounted on a flat trailer. I've been searching the site for the answer to this question. I took the factory aircraft starter of and got an Airtec rear set up. Is there something else I need to block off to get the pressure up? The factory accessory case is still on. I just made a plate to close the factory starter hole. I removed the filter and half assed cleaned it. I removed the oil pressure relief valve. It seemed fine. Not adjustable just screws in and out. Any suggestions would be great. I don't know aircraft motors. It was supposed to be a recent rebuild before I got it but it had sat quite awhile.

Yes where the starter shaft goes into the housing you have to put a solid plug there. There is an oil galley behind the bearing.

Just plug the hole in the slot where the bendix on the starter goes or something deeper in? If I put the old starter back on would that do it?

Measure the stub shaft diameter and length to mounting face, slide a piece of same size pipe into it, long enough that the cover plate holds it in place. If no size pipe available, take solid aluminum dowel and have it machined.
I never finish anyth,,,.
