0470-13 help

Postby dimotta » Tue Jan 16, 2018 8:36 am

I have a new me 0470-13 and it has a ma-6-aa carb I've been told that the carb is too large but what I want to ask about is after a short ride the engine will smoke blueish grey on one bank of cylinders then it will clear up and start smoking on the other bank of cylinders then it will clear up . After the smoke stops if you rev it up you will get heavy grey/black smoke then clears up any help would be great

Not only does your description imply 'them' to be correct, but . . .
Every indication here is that you correct. That is the wrong carb and is to big.

Additionally, you will find a manual for your 'new to you' engine at this link:
http://www.southernairboat.com/pdf/aircraftengines/continental/470/Continental_0-470_13A_IPC.pdf
After you open it, you can [Save As...] to keep a local copy.

deno is absouletly correct...the 6AA HELICOPTER IS A 277 bore for the 540 engines...you need an MA-4-5 with the 187 bore or a 5AA helicopter carb for your 470...I have afresh rebuilt bench tested 5AA converted to a 4-5 for the 470 if ya wanna do some dealing for the 6AA

From my experience the grey black smoke would indicate either getting to much fuel or the fuel pressure is off. I don't know if this applies to aircraft engines but the blueish grey smoke would indicate burning oil.

Pull oil fill cap off, if it smells like gasoline you running rich. If your Oil becomes diluted with gasoline it will cook every metal to metal part in that motor.
