290 GPU generator. or alternator. what to use?

Postby GrassFlatsMafia » Fri Apr 05, 2019 1:51 pm

So I've got this little GPU that I'd like to keep original'ish. It has a generator. I've not tried to use it, but I'm going to assume it does not function. The drive belt is missing so I haven't tried it. Motor runs like new. It's awesome.

Change my mind: :dontknow:
I think I want to keep the generator, and actually I'd like to have the original one rebuilt. I do want to keep the set up as close to original as I can. I'm not looking for high performance or latest and greatest. I'm not really concerned with the price either way. I think I can get a new/rebuilt DELCO generator for like $350, so that's not too steep if rebuilding the original is in that ballpark. I do want it to run and be reliable, so that's the more important factor.

I value all your opinions so thanks in advance.

Original is cool but a generator has to run faster to charge and doesn't have as much capacity to charge. You also have a voltage regulated and related wiring to contend with. If your going to be frogging this boat and your using something other than a led headlight you may not be able to keep battery charged.
Alternator is a one wire hook up, charges at lower speeds and is lighter.

Hard to beat a GM 7127 63 amp single wire alternator for price, performance and simplicity. One wire to positive post of battery and belt to spin it is all it needs. If you buy on line with a discount code would be around $55 at Advance Auto Parts. We bought one yesterday for a new build I'm doing so have the part number for you. It's a cheapie but has a year warranty.

*GMAC, this is a different boat/motor than the aircraft 290 we have.
Port side, stern, underbelly. Basically same place as the one on our other 290. It appears to be an original’ish Delco.
This is a pretty old boat/motor set up. Hadn’t been run in years and years.

Thanks for the input guys.
