switching from magnetos to electronic ignition?

Hi,

First post, new to this scene but sliding for 15 years. :D Need experienced advice for something that i never broke before -

I have a lycoming straight valve and had a magneto race bearing go and wallow out where it sits in the block - someone told me they could weld a new seat but have to breakdown the engine or go with a new engine. Now i dont have that kind of cash for a new engine and i don't knowhat kind of life i can get out of a weld. I'm sure it can be good. BUT someone also said an cheaper option is to switch to electronic ignition.

So, my questions are - what are the pros, cons and typical issues with doing this? :dontknow:

Thanks.

IMO.....when this kind of thing happens.....sell your mags and wires put a pacemaker ignition on it and never look back

Pacemaker is the way to go..just be sure and use the right tach for the pacemaker ignition.

I use an electronic tach ran from the pacemaker box. So you see what the ignition sees, preference maybe?

Yeah I've noticed that my tach is off compared to the pacemaker panel by best I can tell sitting on side of the boat strapped down on the trailer it's 100rpm higher than the mechanical tach if not more.. I'm guessing cause it's reading right at the flywheel

x2, I had the same thing happen but could still get the bearing to work. I have a pacemaker now and love it. It appears to have better throttle response and cranks instantly. I will never go back.
