Mini Starter on a 454

Post by TSnake » Wed Jun 09, 2010 2:59 pm

I keep seeing these mini gear-reduction starters. I like the less weight idea but an 8 lb starter for a 454 just dosn't seem right. Anyone tried these on a big-block in an airboat? Do they work and do they hold up to airboat abuse?

You bet they do. Get a powermaster XS platinum and watch how she spins...

I have a small gear reduction starter from jegs on a high compression 496 for 1 year now, it workes great! I ran them for years on race cars with 13.5 to 1 compression BBC never had problems. Mine are the less $ Jegs brand.

They work great but spend a little more and get a good one. My turnkey motor came with a lower quality unit that didn't work. Replaced it with a quality starter and it works perfect.

I have a mini starter on my 530 and my distributer is locked out at 35.5* of timming. My engine turns over with ease even when it is hot.
