383 Propeller for DD

Post by FishinCoop101 » Wed Oct 27, 2010 10:29 pm

Well I spent the extra time and money went from the old spun 350 and turned it into a new 383.New rotating assembly new cam....the works. Im currently running a 72 LXL 38 Stick and it is too much motor for this propeller. I spin this propeller up really quickly and have to really watch the tach. I am wondering what propeller would better suit my new powerplant and if you guys have had any experience with a DD 383. I was considering going with a Whirlwind Q-series propeller 72" length. Any suggestions would be greatly appriciated. And no I really dont want to go with a reduction unit at this time. Maybey in the future.

I ran a 72" Whirlwind supersnapper on my 14' DD with a 383. Cruised ok but in my opinion it was pretty loud. If i had the chance again i think i would try a sensenich or a WW and try to compare the noise. just my two cents.

good luck

I AM REALLY IMPRESSED WITH THE WIRLWIND WHISPER TIP PROP. IT WAS DESIGNED FOR A D.D. APPLICATION IF I AM NOT MISTAKEN. I RUN A NARROW BLADE WHISPER TIP AND IT PUSHES TWICE AS HARD AS MY OLD POWERSHIFT. THE HUB IS SUPER EASY TO ADJUST ALSO. YOU WILL BE HAPPY WITH THIS PROP. CALL WHIRLWIND AND TALK TO PATTY. SHE IS VERY KNOWLEGIBLE AND SUPER NICE. EVERYONE I KNOW THAT HAS THE WHIRLWIND WHISPER TIP IS SUPER HAPPY.

what size of whisper tip would you recomend MJD? I couldnt help but notice that most of them that show up on the classifieds are cut down less than 72 inches. When i ran that super snapper i couldnt imagine trying to run one longer than 72 inches or any fatter.

run the whisper tip narrow in 70" .. the super snapper was a loud old school design prop made when no consideration was given to sound signatures just brute force ... tell em I told ya to call ... I need the cookies
Don't waste your time ... it is the only thing you can't get more of
.. if it accidentally looks like I gave advice please ignore it .. and notify me immediately

I moved from a 72 inch 3 blade IVO to a 72 inch 2 blade Q powered by a stock 400 sbc on a heavy hull. I went from getting stuck when stopping in 6 inchs of water to being able to drive across sand bars and park on the sand bar and get going again. I never made any changes to my engine when I changed props. I was running with the Q prop set on the 2 setting. I believe your 383 should have a little more tourqe than my engine and would be able to handle a 3 blade Q. Good luck with your choice. And it was not as noisy as the previous prop and I was very happy with the Q. I ended up going to a new hull and moved to a 2 blade R 76 inch. You can see my old boat when I had the IVO on it in my photos.

James,

I was spinning the Q at 2850 on the 2 setting and having no problems getting around. I did put a woodie 72x34 on it while I was waiting for my Q to come in and it ran OK but I still was much happier with the Q than I was with the IVO or the Woodie.

I WOULD HAVE TO AGREE WITH CNTRY AND RUN A NARROW BLADE WHISPER TIP. I WOULD CALL AND TALK TO PATTY ALSO SINCE SHE IS THE EXPERT ON THESE PROPS. I WOULD SAY EITHER A 70" OR 72" NARROW WOULD DO THE TRICK.
