Anybody run a 454/502's

Post by GeeLeDouche »

I have a mild case of some sort of compulsiveness and lately I have been obsessing about wanting to build my "dream boat" but doing it on somewhat of a budget. I want to go big,, something like a deep water hull aluminum 18x8 (give or take) with a 454 or 502 motor (+ reduction and prop). I would like to do a complete built/rebuild of the motor myself, both for the experience and the budget. I have read the thread on superchevy about building the 700HP 454 under 2500 bucks probably 15 times,, thinking to myself "I'd be tickled pink with a 500hp motor for 3K!!".

Basically Im curious to see who runs big blocks, what parts / upgrades you would suggest for building a BB airboat motor. Is it worth hunting down a 4 bolt as apposed to a 2 bolt block to start with? Thanks guys

Gee,
Contact Ronnie Thibodaux at Ronnie's Airboats. Look up Ronnies airboats on the web. His work number is there. He is a personal friend of my family. He runs bbc's on all of his work boats. He has one in particular that they named "Big Girl". It's 12' wide and I think 20' long. It's a pile driving rig, full deck over. Empty, the boat will run dry. Fully loaded with 12.000 lbs on the deck, it struggles to run dry. From what he tells me, it will run "some" dry fully loaded. It's a 454 which is modified swinging a 4 blade Water Walker. It's a machine for sure. Give Mr. Ronnie a call and tell him that Rene' LeBlanc sent you there. He is a nice guy and will send you in the right direction.

I had a 15ft Diamondback with a crate GM Marine 454 rated at 425hp and 500lbs of torque. 2.09-1 Stinger gearbox. That boat was very impressive for how heavy it was. It would pretty much go wherever you pointed it.

What about the square ports vs oval ports for airboat application? is there a preference?
