Help Needed

Post by Clint Hall » Sat Jul 20, 2013 8:33 pm

Well bought a motor and gear box off here trying to get this boat done before winter. Checked cyl pressure before I handed the guy the money all eight cyl were from 140 to 150psi. W/ 65psi of oil pressure. Decided to put new valve cover, oil pan, timing, front crank and rear main seals in it before it went in the boat because I hate leaks!!! Dropped the oil out of it and whamooo bout a 1/4 quart of antifreeze in the pan. This is a vortech headed small block. Any ideas before I tear it completely down?? Possible intake gasket? This just made for a really crappy weekend

From what iv read the vortec heads are prone to crack. I had water in my 4 and 6 cylinder and in my 7 cylinder. Had um checked and both heads were cracked. Not sayin thats your problem but I would have them checked.

I would try a leak down test on all cylinders and see if you can determine where the problem is
if you argue with an idiot who is the real idiot

Definately do a leak down test. Let us know what you find.

I would have to wonder if this guy knew about this or not. I would talk to him and work it out. If he is a stand up guy you could come to a happy ending. If not then he sold you something that was not as advertised. talk to him and let us know the outcome. Hopefully your response will not be sent to thread heaven if the guy tried to screw you.

Yes, possibly intake gasket. Like you said.

I honestly don't believe the seller had any idea of it. It's no offense to the guy but I don't think he was too mechanically inclined

After you get Coolant in Oil Pan issue resolved, would be interesting to see what your cranking cylinder pressure is after she has ran for a bit.

Equally, 140-150 is good being that all cylinders are near same.

140-150 seems low for static cranking pressure.

Battery, starter, or just has not ran for a long while. All could be possibilities of why cranking pressure is 140-150?

When you checked cranking pressure on all cylinders, did you open up the throttle plate(s)?

Well both heads are junk! Talked to the guy I bought it from and he is insistent that it never ran hot or had any problems. Lesson learned I guess I now have a really expensive gear box! I can't figure out how some ppl sleep at night!!

Gotta try to round up another motor now. I would be completely happy with a stock motor for now till I can recover financially from all of this. Any suggestions for a feller on a tight budget!

You need a set of heads not an engine. Brand new castings and "SHOULD" fit your existing components.

The bottom end is pretty tired also. Turns out the motor is out of a 97 Tahoe. Seems the general consensus it to not waist the money on a 2 bolt main block. I'm a mopar guy and I have personally twisted the crap out of some 440's and never had an issue w/ mains but I'm not a Chevy guy so I stick to the norm.

Sorry to hear about your situation, It sucks. Hpefully you can find a junkyard special to hold up untill you can get a motor built.I assume the guy has washed his hands of the matter. Did he represent it as a strong healthy motor?

Kinda out of money now bud. So it's back to the drawing board. And yes the motor was advertised as healthy. Now I remember why I usuall build my own stuff.
