Breaking in SBC 350 engine with just gearbox?

Post by scottyroll »

Is it OK to break in my new rebuilt engine on my rigging with just the motor hooked up to my rotator 2.68 gearbox behind it? Do I need a prop or some load to protect it?

No, just do not over RPM the engine.

Its always better on an engine to have some load on it.

James, I'm not quite sure about the cam at the moment. It's a rebuilt Chevy 350 budget engine; pretty much stock internals except flat top pistons. The builder put a "mild cam" in it and it has stock head assemblies. Probably has about 325horses tops.

With out a prop you will need to put a fan on your radiator or else it won't take long at all to run it hot.

You can also spray the radiator with a garden hose while it's running.

With no prop and breaking in the cam, I would be prepared on the front side to do both.

Thanks for the input guys. I def don't want to mess up my brand new engine on my "budget build" . I'll probably score a prop first.

No doubt that would be the best, safest bet on both counts :thumbleft:
