Rotator/Stinger/Precision

Post by ptillman » Sun Aug 25, 2013 7:55 pm

Anyone have input on why not to run a precision drive? I have no experience with them. I was leaning towards a rotator originally. The precision has a good price! Why??? I am running a 500hp SBC and a 80" 3 R prop.

The Precision box is very limited on gear ratios. With a 383 and "R" series blades you would be much happier with a 2.38-2.68 ratio. Unless something has changed the Precision boxes are all 2:1. I had a Precision and a Rotator. Both are a little nosiy and both performed very well. But the 2.68 that the Rotator offered made my boat a beast on the hill.

I dont have a reason to not run one. i run a used precision 2-1 and I have no complaints. pretty basic sbc about 330hp with 78" 2 blade. if you are looking for a 2-1 ratio i'd go with precision and save your money.

I definitly want a 2.68:1 and I thought the precisions came in other ratios. If not, that will make my decision.

Get a ballistic box or a rotator the rotator is loud but they have been around for a long time. That being said the ballistic boxes are awsome

If you put a wide blade prop on your rotator it would sound just like that precision. With a warp or razor x my precision is pretty quiet. I'm at 375 horse with a2:1 and run the hill like a champ. Don't be afraid of a 2:1 anything.

I agree with ya totally. I'd like to try a wide blade prop but I don't think I could deal with all the knocking and clanging my box would make probably. The ox box is so quiet you can't even see it. :stirpot:

Why does changing the prop have anything to do with how noisy a gear box is does is change the harmonics ??? I thought some boxes had helical cut gears and others were straight cut. :dontknow:

Helical gears will definity make it quieter, but gears of the same size, the straight cut gears are stronger.

Because the sound "noise" of the gearbox resonates through wide hollow blades. No wide hollow blade " warp or razor x", not near the noise. Big difference.

I can't seem to find anything on the Ox Box. I found 1 youtube video from GTO that shows it. I do like the disengage feature!!
