Needing more out of my ZZ454

Post by Swamp Rat 440 » Tue Jul 22, 2014 8:25 pm

Ive been running a GMPP ZZ454 on a 14X7 homemade hull for a few years and now I'm thinking I want more out of it. Got it turning a 3 blade 78 WW Stump Puller 5200rpm and can go anywhere in our area, just lookin to get a lil bit more out of it. It has short headers and the GM dual Plane intake. Was thinking of upgrading to long tube headers and maybe an intake change. Any opinions????

Everybody else upgraded, and I don't like being in the back!!
Even thought about a turbo set up......
Just curious if anyone had the same motor and did a few bolt on improvements.

Call up Mike at MAS motors in the mid-west. He can tell you the magic equation.

For that instance, you could also call up Whites Performance I South Carolina and they ha e the BBC and airboat application down to a science as well.

I was going to mention ratio also, might be more effective then f..ken with the motor. Also consider changing out the stump puller for a R blade or one of the newer performance blades. Bud

Trying to milk more out of a high petformance engine with time on it usually results in it blowing up! Leave it alone and enjoy it while you build or save up for a 572.

better heads
intake
camshaft
make it a 496
go to a 2.55/2.68 ratio

trying to keep up with everyone cost money as said save money for the 572

Got a 2:1 right now. Thought about a higher ratio but that would mean less prop speed, I would hope pitch would make up for that.
Just wanna make sure I'm getting everything out of the motor. It only has about 125 hours and its 4 years old.

I run a purpose built 454 and in my opinion don't got to a 255 or 268. A 2.3 ratio is a good ratio for a BBC. I have ran both ratios, broke a narrow gear box 2.3 and currently have 268 but would rather have went back with the 2.3. I run a 3 blade S on mine

I use 2.3 ratio on almost all my big block engines and they work really well. I really don't think long tube headers will make much difference if any IMO.

14x7 with a big block 2:1 recuction..... that thing sounds like a sure enough wrist rocket to me...trade ya my trusty DD 383 airgator for the weekend and you will love that sled your sittin' on a whole lot better..... sounds like a winning combo.... and like someone already posted.... id leave a performance build alone.... :thumbleft: :florida:

Thanks for the opinions guys looks like I'm gonna try a 2.3 bottom gear. The people at whirlwind claim I won't get much more out of some new blades so we will see what happens with the gear. Most of our running is dry ground on old pipelines and through the woods so that's all the performance I worry about. Open water gains will just be a bonus.

Anxious to see your results. I am thinking hard about trying the 2.3 reduction on my 496.

Can't really go wrong with a 2.3 on a BBC

Update. Decided on a cam and intake first, then we will try the 2.3 later.

15% more usable torque from a gear swap would be the simplest and cheapest fix, first.

The cam and intake need to be matched, pushrods must be correct length (unless hydraulic lifters), valve seats may need to be ground, heads may need to be port matched and flowed, valve springs might not be strong enough or have enough bind height.
Gaskets, know how and some time ... please pick your parts carefully. With the right choice you can achieve more gains than the gear swap, but besure to get the right parts, with advice from a BBC guru.

Torque multiplication is king here and you dont want to decrease reliability by turning the engine higher in the rpm range.

Not going all out on cam and intake just more duration and better flow and jet carb right. Also don't plan to turn more that 52-5300. Gonna see what overall gain is then put the gear in. Not quite sold on the gear for push on land though.

Update on the Swamp Rat zz454.
After a few set backs we ended up with an AirGap intake, a Comp Cam XR284 cam a a lot of jetting on the Demon carb we got 350 rpm. Still looks a little lean but gonna check the air fuel ratio and tune some more. Hoping for a total of 400+ rpm gain. After engine is optimized we will put it on the push scale and play with the prop pitch.
