Hey diggin, take your harness off and send it to Jim's performance (410) 465-9569. He makes harnesses look slick! He DOES NOT build harnesses. He just cleans em up and no1 knows it's not factory!

I sent him a COMPLETE truck harness, including 2 big fuse boxes. I shipped it in a huge box when I got it back it was in a small package, like a shoe box. Looked like it was made at the gm plant and everything was labeled too

Sounds like one of Mas BBC, they do it on all their motors 2 years/unlimited hours

Fuel tank set in place. Time to start cutting hoses and drilling holes. My plan is to center the tank between the engine stand legs, which represents a rearward movement of about an inch. I don't see this as an issue due to the fact the LSA weighs about 280 lbs less than the 496. I could go another inch rearward before clearance with the radiator tubes become an issue. Any comments about placement?

Don't have any pictures to show but the progress report is, barring any unforeseen circumstances, the barge will be on the water this weekend. The balance of the work is to finish the plumbing, reset the cage, wire in the lights, mount and pitch the prop then start pushing some air. Exhaust and fuel system finished tomorrow, intercooler coolant system, possibly set cage, on Wednesday, set cage (if not already done), plumb in expansion tank, wire cage and running lights, and remount prop on Thursday, test run on trailer Friday. Test ride in 2A on Saturday. All things go well, I'll be back out into 3A on Sunday. Maybe not; some good football coming up. Then, on to the sled. ;) Do I go with a hot 360 or a 540? Hmmmmmmm :lol:

Fuel system done, engine cooling done, working on exhaust right now. Might just have to fire it up for sheets and geegles. :lol:

This thing is maddening sometimes. Of course, I finally figured out what the problem is. This motor came from Detroit! Don't believe me? Look! It's got dredlocks! :lol:

We were having problems getting the mufflers and flex pipe to cooperate. Walked away from it, came in this morning and they went right together. It was more of a joke than anything. That wire harness does look like the back of a Jamaican's head. ;)

She RUNS!! Finally got to start the motor. Brought her up to operating temperature under idle, checking for leaks and monitoring gauges. Had to stop a couple of times to get more air purged and add coolant. I outfitted the exhaust with Vibrant 1059 mufflers because the new motor has 3" collectors but I also have 4" thru hulls so the Vibrants are 3" in, 4" out. The throat of the muffler is 4 inch all the way through and I was a bit concerned that they may not do their job. Granted, I haven't put the engine under load yet (I'll mount the prop tomorrow after I re-install the cage) but this thing is quiet. Ridiculously so. The Aeromotive fuel pump makes more noise. Between the NGR prop and these mufflers, this should be one very quiet ride. The other thing that struck me was how smooth the engine runs. I pretty much expected it since the motor was designed for a Cadillac and doubtful it would have any kind of lumpy idle but this is much smoother than anticipated. That also tells me there's a world of performance bottled up inside. ;) My phone battery was dead so I couldn't get a video but that will be tomorrow. Can't wait. The barge is back!

Today was a busy day around the shop so only got as far as getting the cage on and re-installing the prop. Started motor and began the recommended run-in (sea trial) procedure, which amounts to idling for 10 minutes to bring everything up to operating temperature, recording temp and oil pressure. Then bring engine speed up to 2,000 RPM for 10 minutes, record, 3,200 RPM for ten minutes, record, then WOT for 1 minute, record, then return to idle for 10 minutes. Everything going fine during idle. Bring it up to 2,000 RPM and the temp slowly crept up to around 200 degrees. Brought it up to 3,200 RPM and temperature shot up over 210 and we shut it down. Here's the odd thing; hose on outlet side of water pump hot and hard. Intake from radiator still cold. Inlet side of radiator hot, outlet side cold. Obviously, water is not circulating. Only thing I can come up with is bad thermostat from the factory. Any other ideas?

sounds like a stuck or bad thermostat, or possibly an air pocket still exists

Pretty sure no air pockets. We spent a lot of time last night purging the system and made sure today we weren't having to add any additional fluid before we started our test.

Chances of a bad thermostat are extremely small although not impossible. Diamondback has done probably in the hundreds of these motors. I would call and talk to 1 of the techs. Prob save a lot of time and headache.

Its still got air in it.....and its getting hot
You can take the lower hose off, put your garden the hose in it, till water comes out of the overflow tank
They are hard to get air all out.....takes me like 10 to 15 starts

Finally. After nearly 5 months, the barge is back on the water. :cheers: Headed out to 2A tonight and tomorrow, 3A on Sunday. 8)

Had a nice, long weekend to run the boat. Shook a few bugs out, still need to work on the pitch of the prop. I can only turn 4,800 RPM but I'm wondering if it's the prop holding the motor or if the motor is holding itself back. It seems like it builds RPM very quickly until it suddenly stops. On the other hand, I can cruise at 2,800 at a decent pace but boat is more comfortable at 3,200, which could mean I do have too much pitch. I used to cruise at 3,400 RPM. The biggest difference is the ride. I had to put a trim tab on the boat when it had the BBC because nothing else would stop the porpoise. Never touched the trim tab all weekend; boat ran nice and flat. If anything, it would push over on its nose the couple of times I gave it WOT. Sure did help losing those 300 extra pounds. As far as performance, about the same as the BBC, which was anticipated. The two motors have nearly identical torque even though the new motor makes nearly 80 more hp. So, as they say, torque turns the prop, hp holds it there. Motor only has 6 hours on it and still need to tweak the prop so very premature in making any concrete opinions. I want to put at least another 6 or so before I start putting it through its paces. I will say, though, the boat got plenty of compliments. I love my sled but it sure was nice to be back on the barge. Like stepping from a Corvette to an Escalade, minus the hp. :)

IMO I'd say its the prop too Gregg. There's no limiter in place that would hold it at 4,800rpm. That motor likes some RPM to so don't be afraid to turn it 5600rpm WOT on the water.

The reason I considered possibly the motor would be if the knock sensors were too sensitive and interpreted the noise from gearbox and/or prop as detonation and responded accordingly. I'm not saying I have noise in my box; it was just rebuilt and only has about 80 hours on it. Just my wheels turning. ;) I feel it's most likely the prop. We'll know soon enough. Tomorrow, I'll take 5 degrees out and see what happens. That should get it spinning.

Right now, the way it's set up, the boat cruises at 3,200 RPM with a light load. Today, I had 6 adults and one kid on board and cruise went up to 3,900 RPM. Boat was riding on its nose with all the weight. Top speed is 54 MPH at 5,100 RPM. I did start to see better fuel consumption this last tank. It's up to 2.8 mpg (GPS odometer). I'll be posting performance updates on my "3 or 4?" thread so watch for it there.
