Need Info on 350 vortec dd build

Post by robertjr » Fri Jan 23, 2015 4:24 pm

I got a stock 99 350 vortec im looking to use as dd for a new boat. What are some ideas or parts to use to get the maximum power out of it?

SERIOUSLY ANY GEAR BOX.

I ran one until a rod flew out. I ran it both ways dd and then a gear.

Yeah these boxes nowadays are bullet proof as can be for the majority of us airboaters. Increase resale value and turn more prop than any comparable modification pretty much. If motor blows; no money is lost/ejected out the sides with regard to the gearbox.

Robert, there are a bunch of guys on here that can give you some great advice on building your DD motor.
Be patient and I'm sure they'll start posting. Gearboxes are nice if you have that kind of money, but they're not
necessary to build a nice little boat that'll get you and your family on the water.

I say a gear box so you don't wipe out your thrust bearing.

I run a dd 350 chevy from the 70s. I ve heard the 90s motors do even better. I would buy a low end cam, but it seems stock motors do good for direct drive. if you put any money I would put it toward gear box, direct drive is pretty much limited.

How much HP are you going to get out of an engine at 3000 rpm??? but I understand you and I are not made out of money

your post said you wanted to run dd. did not say anything about gear box so i will put my 2 cents in. i run 14 rivermaster with rod boxes so it is a very heavy boat. i have 350 vortec motor. summet 1100 cam, eldo intake, 600 eldo carb, carter fuel pump, hei dist. it is not a barn stormer but it does pretty good for what it is. if you run a 12 or 13 light boat you should be able to run some dry with this setup.

I have the same setup, but no rod boxes and not vortec. I was turning a 68 38 about 2900.

Would you do the engine work yourself or have someone else do it? I would substitute parts and labor and put that towards a gearbox.

Ted & I understand you want to go DD for the time being but please understand that more than likely if you stick with airboating you will want to pursue a gearbox or caddy 500 and if you set up your motor to run with in the power range of a DD you could very well limit yourself in the future should you decide to upgrade to GB; not to mention stock engines don't typically last forever, especially if you already are working with a used engine. Each application is designed to operate in a specific power band in regards to cam choice and I would just leave it stock for the time being.

I always wanted to try a whispertip because I heard it was quieter. I am running a four blade warp drive. :salute: the warp drive pushes good on the ground :salute: I did try a two blade h, it doesn't push on ground as good as warp drive, but it was fast and made the boat fast. it was fun but burned more gas.

I've got a 12ft sled with a 350 vortec dd boat. I did a fair amount of research before building it dd and am running 6" prop adapter. Seems to do pretty good. Make sure you put the correct plugs for a vortec and have your timing g spot on. Made a huge difference in me running dry and not. I hav a 72" signature series from water walker and love it. Gets the job do e and decent on fuel. Good luck on your decision

I am getting a 350 direct drive boat tomorrow, it has a 5 blade warp drive prop on a 6" spacer on an 11' fiberglass hull that is decked over. what should I expect out of this set up? new to air boats so not looking for anything to fancy, getting it for under 5 grand. here are a few pics of it. I am in Deleon Springs about 5 miles from Deland.
would love to meet other air boater in the area that can show me where to run this thing.
