Decisions! White's Preformance 383 or Glen Treadwell 383 or?

Post by SwampFly » Fri Feb 20, 2015 11:54 am

Please no bashing! But I need some help on this! I am about to pull the trigger on a 500hp 383 stoker motor. I have narrowed it down to one of these two builders. I would appreciate anyone who can shed some light on this subject.. Thanks!!! :dontknow:

I've never owned a White's engine "YET" but will when I do build my boat. My buddy had the exact same motor in a heavy a$$ 14' diamondback deck over and the boat was unstoppable and dang did it sound good too!

Not familiar with any of Glen's engines; but for me, White's would be a time saving no brainer.

If you do a search on Junglecat's posts you find more than a passive amount of information about White's Performance and his experience(s) dealing with those guys.

It would only help your cause to include your location in your profile. It could be that there is one of either of those engines close by and the owner hasn't spoke up because he doesn't realize that you are in his neighborhood.

I'm partial to Glen. He is a Hell of ot closer than whites should there ever be an issue. And he's been doit it for years. Pm bonecollector on here, he uses him alot. He's building me a motor now. Honest as they come and easybto deal with.

There isn't a better builder in the area than Glen I have ran one White's engine and within 20 minutes it was spitting antifreeze out of every hole in it. That being said I pulled the engine off drove it 10 hours to Whites shop that night got there when they opened and they un loaded it and rebuilt it while I waited and its been getting beat on every since with no issues. I haven't used them since but I don't want to push anyone in one direction or another. Glen has built 95% of the engines I use on my boats with no issues he understands airboats and what they require. He also has a dyno right there so you can go watch it and see exactly what your getting. To me it's a no brainer as far as build time Whites will be around 3-4 weeks and Glen runs about the same. Good luck

A lot has to be said about having your engine builder close. White's always did me right , but them being in Kingsport Tenn. is a bummer. Testing combinations on the dyno up there was a great time , but a long trip. My brother in law is an engine builder and we built last one here with their parts. My brother in law recently has done several motor swaps with motors from Keith Sherhouse (MAS dealer) with a good warranty . Glenn has been a known engine builder in these parts for a long time and never heard any bad comments.
Now I've ran 355 , 383 and 427 small blocks. The most bang for your buck is the 383. The 427 is a monster but the difference in price with special block , crank ,pistons machine work and more fuel consumption I'd go with a 383 if on a budget.

Tristar engines is another good builder if you are looking for a crate motor they have a 2 yr warranty as well. I don't want anyone taking my commits about Whites the wrong way they took care of the engine I took back to them and my customer in Texas is hard on it and it has held up with no issues since. I just prefer being able to go to Glen's and talk about what I want and having it done local. Every builder has issues, some take longer than others some are more cost more. The main thing is being comfortable with who you give your hard earned money too.

I recommended a whites motor from jungles post and probably the worst second hand advice I ever gave!!! Motor is a beast when it stayed together which was 25% of our rides! Leaks and falling off parts I can't say whites is even an option I would consider!!

Got to agree with Bone , having a builder close is nice , only thing better is having one in family. I thing the main things to be concern with is good quality parts and the right combination of parts. Everything compliments each other, and works together.

I sell engines for MAS Performance. All engines are dyno tuned and ready to run. I probably can't beat everyone's pricing because we only use brand new quality parts in our builds. We do warranty our engines for two years. Give me a call.

So the decision has been made. I have decided to go with White's Preformance for my 383 build. It was a hard decision because after numerous conversations with both builders,I have to say that both where extremely professional and informative. I did manage to get Mr. Fred White on the phone and what a awesome experience that was. It was like talking to an old friend and Mr. White expressed interest in one day becoming an airboat owner himself. I will keep my Southern Airboat family updated on my experience.

Thanks for the input and stay tuned!

So as I promised here is an update. I know there are lots of choices out there and what I would like to do is keep everyone informed so if you have to make the decision that I did, you can use this info in your decision making process.. My Whites Proformance and Machine 383 was built in the timeframe that Charlie promiss. One thing that didn't go as he said was the Dyno test! I ended up with 519hp @5600 :) and 500 ft pounds of Torque @ 5100 rpms. The motor was in the high 400's (torque) 3500 on. That's more then promised and I'm not complaining! I can't wait to get this monster bolted on and see what it all about!

I will start a new tread with pictures when it gets installed.
