MR Kendall's 442cui WaterThunder motor.

Postby Waterthunder » Fri Apr 03, 2015 5:11 pm

Normally when we build one of these beasts the customers demands we keep it all under wraps. Mark said we could use his build for a article so we figured what the heck mis well put it up on Southern. You know some engine porn. So here is the run down we are building Mr. Kendall a 442 cubic inch fuel injected LS. It is based on the GM LS7 block which we will hone with the mains fully torqued and a torque plate on the deck to a 4.130 bore. (because the new factory bore is about as round as a square peg) then we will be utilizing a Callies 4.125 stroke crankshaft. Here is a picture of that sweet little LS7 block which came sealed for our protection.

Image

we will post some crank and rod pictures Monday along with our assembly.

The LSX ended up in a amazingly perfect frame off retro resto 1969 Chevelle. We were building a LSX 502cui for a airboat but Callies is so back logged on the 4.600 stroke cranks the customer couldn't wait. We are installing a set of Brodix heads on this 442, I really think she will run noticeably stronger than Bronsons motor. Brodix has a LS cylinder head that I think will be perfect for our 442cui combo. We will post pictures of the whole build.

Working out damn good...pulled it in Saturday because the oil pressure gauge said 0 . Turns out it was the sending unit...put a manual on it today and has great pressure..why you want some of it...

Boy, if there was ever a time to welcome a bad sending unit, that must have been it.

0 oil pressure make ya chit bricks in a hurry. Glad to hear it was just a sending unit. Easy swap out and back in action.

The vibrations from the big props kill the electric sending units. I see it all the time. I had a few times I was out in the bone docks and my sender went bad. I just removed it cranked the motor and saw oil squirt 8 feet in the air. Then I put it back in and drove it home because I knew I had oil pressure. Man Tony looks like some people got excited at the thought you might have hurt your motor. I guess some people will be dissapointed you didnt have a serious problem. I personally am happy to see it was a bad sending unit.

If you're implying that I am a member of "some people" you are mistaken. I only meant to convey
that, I to, appreciate the relief generated by confirming a bad sending unit; especially in this case.

Interesting. On the LSA, there are two temp sensors; one for the computer, one for the dash. Is that the same for the oil pressure as well (I only see one external)? If not, then I would assume that should the OP sensor fail, the engine is going to shut down. Would it behoove someone to keep an extra on board just in case?
