Cam for sbc 350 and supercharger
Cam for sbc 350 and supercharger
Block getting bored 30 over and I got my hands on set cast iron vortec heads. Couple people told me I should run a cam designed for a supercharger and I came across this summit kit k1105
Duration 298/304, Lift .466/.487
Hard to get any tech help on how this cam will perform on airboat. Says fair idle and built for midrange power, needs 9.5:1 compression.
Running 2.3 belt drive and most likely a 72" 3 blade

Re: Cam for sbc 350 and supercharger
Not sure on the Cam specs but you can expect to be in the 3k-5k range quite often while cruising around.
Also, I think you are going to need a longer prop - 76" minimum for 2 or 3 blade to get the most out of your set up

Re: Cam for sbc 350 and supercharger
Get a cam intended for boost. Comp has several that will work good. How much boost and what fuel are you planning for?

Re: Cam for sbc 350 and supercharger
are you doing this old school with a carb or will it be electrically controlled? I would suggest you look up ( Guerra Group, Victoria Texas ) on the internet. Pay $25.00 to have Pat run your engine plans through his different computer programs. He will send you several pages to fill out with information on your engine specs and based on the computer models it will come up with the best camshaft grind for your engine combination. Once you have the grind numbers you can use any cam manufacturer to cut your cam. I personally have done this on two different race engines in my Corvette and I was very pleased with the results. Pat is also considered by many to be the best computer tuner in the South. (Pat Guerra)
You need to explain to him that the engine will operating at 100% duty cycle because its an airboat. If he does not feel comfortable about doing the job he will tell you, he has plenty of work.

Re: Cam for sbc 350 and supercharger
what blower you running, psi and how far over driven
Cam for sbc 350 and supercharger
It's a B&M 144 with 7psi pulleys. Pretty much a set up for a stock engine. Have a 750 Holley for fuel, like just run 93 octane if possible. Rest motor just stock fresh bored 30 over with cast vortec heads. Summit tech suggested that 1105 which is set up for nitrous/supercharger and it still has a decent idle, for price can't really beat it.

Re: Cam for sbc 350 and supercharger
that should be a decent cam for your setup but if was me id get better connecting rods it sould make close to 400 hp and 450 ft lbs stock ones probly wont hold for long
Re: Cam for sbc 350 and supercharger
I ran a 177 with 10 psi on a 406 sbc with stock 5.7 rods with no problems. Make sure rotating assembly is balanced!

Re: Cam for sbc 350 and supercharger
Using stock crank, rods and just oversize stock Pistons. Shouldn't it be balanced still as it was from factory?
I am getting new performance dampner flex plate and timing chain etc. what should I do about balancing it?

IF the pistons are over sized they should be heavier putting it out of balance. Look up J&J balancing and talk to them, 200 bucks well spent! and there in jupiter farms

Re: Cam for sbc 350 and supercharger
A ZZ4 350 makes 355 horse and 405 torque. N/A piece. I think.
Adding a 298/304 advertised duration camshaft, 750 carb, vortec heads and 7 pounds of boost. New setup gonna make 400 horse & 450 tq. Stock rods won't work and gonna use a 2.3 ratio and a 3 blade 72" prop.
I rode in a 32 ford with near same setup. Turbo 350 trans.

FYI you will be almost full boost at cruse 3000rpm i wouldnt build it with stock rods your just asking for trouble
also 78" or bigger prop, 3 blade r would be good i think just my 2 cents
ask johnny at J&J hes a great guy very smart he will probly tell you the same

Re: Cam for sbc 350 and supercharger
I would think you will need a bigger 3 blade.
LSmatt has stock EFI 5.3 vortec 2:1 belt and he turn a 3 blade R 76", just as a reference. I run a 81" 2 bdl r with a carbed 5.3 and a 2:1. HP is may be 325.

I was told 87 and later rods are good to about 475 hp, would 7 psi really be enough to damage them?
If so I might stick with my plain Jane cast heads to keep the power down then, I can't afford $400 on decent set of rods .
I'm going prob end up running 78" 3 blade falcon I'm just going have to redo my cage for it

Re: Cam for sbc 350 and supercharger
someone gave you the wrong info they will not hold 475hp ive seen then brake in stock engines. you need to just spend 230 dollars on a set of egale sir connecting rods that will hold 500hp. hate to see you put all this effort just to redo it and spend even more money
Cam for sbc 350 and supercharger
I've just come across several builds with this smaller chargers and they all using stock rods and vortec heads making much more hp than I'm going to. But I guess I should just come off my wallet more. Rotating assembly will need to be balanced after new rods right?

Re: Cam for sbc 350 and supercharger
in all points its up to you.. But as a engine builder myself id never put stock rods in a motor making more than 350hp its just not practical for longevity plus its not in a car or truck that cruises at 1800 rpm. youll be at 3000 witch makes it worse on the bottom end creating more boost at cruise
Re: Cam for sbc 350 and supercharger
If you keep the engine out of detonation and the rpms reasonable the stock rotating assembly will be fine. I have ran stock 5.7 gm rods to 8000+ rpms and high 9's in the 1/4 @ 147 mph. Also sprayed with a 200 shot. They will live if the tune is on. With what I have done if you have the money to build a better engine then by all means do so, and if not tread cautiously but don't be scared to carry on with your build.

Reconditioning used Con Rods
Magnaflux
shot ping
Install good rod bolts
Resize
Not cost effective.
Lots of things to know to make one live.
8000 RPM and not mentioning having reconditioned is interesting in itself.
Not saying it cant be done, just interesting.

Re: Cam for sbc 350 and supercharger
Just an FYI. I have a lots of experience with those Eagle rods. They are decent piece for the money. The rod bolt are very durable but need to be stretched multiple times before final assembly torquing and must use the ARP lube. We are mandated by rules to use our Circle track engines and have turned 1000's of laps at over 7000RPM making close to 500hp.
