The more experience you get under your belt, the more you will see the potential flaws and issues with the project you opted out of.
You are to be congratulated again for seeking out and then acting on the advice you were given.

It's amazing how often someone seeks out advice and then convinces themselves they know better, they then proceed with
learning the hard way. Later, when the same questions are posed again by someone else, they have invariably joined the other side.

I know if I were treading water, I'd rather see that boat coming for me than the one y'all almost started with. :)

Couple things I would budget to change as far as a Sar boat!
Hull bump stop down under before you break off or bend that winch stand? And a harbor freight swing jack to get rid of that very time consuming vertical antique, especially on a sar boat!

Nice job in all but experience will teach you in some fashion or another!

Well I just spent 4 days in Iowa Training the members of the Van Meter fire Department that does all there water rescue and Wow what a nice group of folks, cant say I have ever met a nicer group of folks and that is some beautiful country out there in Iowa, the first day the boat ran great on the second day we started having engine problems , fixed them and then more problems finally got everything working really well late Saturday afternoon all external stuff plug wires, distributor cap, spark plugs, water pump, clogged radiator, and fuel pick up on fuel tank and electric fuel pump, now it runs fantastic but they will eventually be adding some more power to the engine

The guys at the fire dept really busted there butts fixing this boat up and getting the boat running great and with a little help from me and some great advice from Dave Hartz , we did get all the basic Airboat operator class done and all of the students passed but they made it easy since they listened to what I was teaching them and then executed it perfectly, they were all about safety and doing it right and I think this boat and crew is going to be a great asset to there town and the area around them, there were several other agencies that came out to look and see what the boat could do and they now have interest in getting an Airboat now that they have seen what they can do and that they are far and above the regular boats they have been using, I think we may have opened Pandora's box on Airboats in Iowa !!!

There will be one to many lives that appreciate everyone's effort in it. Very happy you got the simple stuff worked out and dependable.
Budget builds suck and tend to fail exactly when they are need most.
Ironically even copper colored starter contact bolts are rusting now so devil in the details!
