Take out 6.0l with E78 power problems

Postby Cowley » Tue Aug 29, 2017 10:32 pm

I have a friend here that needs some help with his new engine, and I sure don't have the knowledge to point him in the right direction. He purchased a used Alumitech hull without an engine. He then purchased a lightly used 6.0l engine and put a VV2 cam from Texas Speed with a few other airboat upgrade parts. Gear Drive 2.55 with a Whirlwind WT prop. He has another friend that has some knowledge on tuning LS engines, but has not had any experience with the E78 computer. They have the engine running and it is running well up to 3,000 RPM. He has purchased all the credits and the appropriate HP tuner and his "Experienced" friend has exhausted his knowledge for getting the RPM's up. Tonight, they went so far as to take all of the pitch out of the prop, but only turned 3,400 RPM on the tach. It seems as though the computer is stuck in Limp Mode. Our area does not have any experienced engine tuners for airboat applications anywhere close enough for him to pay to get the boat running right. He's catching a lot of grief from his young daughters and wife to get the boat going for Labor Day. Believe me, he will appreciate any ideas or suggestions applicable to the engine, not the wife! Thanks for any help you can push his way.

The E78 ECM has a torque based control structure for tuning which requires different tuning skills then the prior generation ECMs. The E78 takes a tuner that really knows the system to get it to operate properly.. Since you said there was no one in your area that can tune, I would do a "mail tune". If he bought HP tuners Pro he can log a run file then email that file and the tune file to a qualified tuner for them to look at the log, tweak the tune then email it back. Jeremy Formato from http://fasterproms.net/ or Phil from Tampa tuning https://shop.tampatuning.com/ would be my top choices of who to use. I've used both of those guys on several different occasions and they are both very good at what they do..

I'm having the same problem with my 2.0 ecotec with a e39a ecm. We've been at it for over a month. And haven't gotten any where. We are also using hp tuner pro. It goes wide open for a second than pulls the throttle back to 30% I'm getting about same rpm as you I'm around 3,500 rpm. If you figure anything out please pass it along!!!!

I had same issue with mine. Make sure it's in free wheel mode. I think that's what it was called. Mine wouldn't hit over low 3s no matter what we did till we found that.
